My Hotel Room 180gl Pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lol, yeah, I can only keep the do not disturb thing up so long :p I'm sure as long as it's empty, raising objections will be difficult for them. I could foresee them having some issues with a 200gl pond setup running in the room. :p. Especially with fish in it - "hmmm, that's an odd thing to have in a room, I wonder what's..." ***splash***

I wish I could find more information on the material that it's made from so I could glue things to it with confidence, but I think I can work around it.

As you know, it's recycled LDPE, or low density polyethylene.

Unfortunately nothing really sticks to it so I would not rely on the silicone to seal up your plumbing. I would use some thick gasket material with your fittings.

3M makes a catalyzed adhesive that bonds fairly well to high density polyethylene and polypropylene. No idea how it would stick to LDPE much less recycled LDPE. Very expensive stuff.

Have you test filled it yet? I've had stock tanks from that company and they tend to bow more than others at the top. I would prefer the structural foam stock tanks from Rubbermaid and other companies.

You could probably built some support for it, however.

[EDIT] Sorry, you only have holes drilled in the bucket. Silicone may stick to that if it's styrene based. I'll leave the rest of my post in case it helps.

Yeah the stock tank itself is LDPE. I'm not sure on the bucket, as it's not from the same company, but there's no label on it for what material it is. The stock tank being LDPE can at least be heat welded.

WRT the bowing - yeah it's very flexible, but I plan on screwing a plywood brace around the top of it as part of the lid. The top lip is around 1/2" thick, so it should hold screws quite nicely. Thanks for the input!

Be very careful heat welding LDPE. My brother in law is a very good plastic welder and he says you can blow through it no problem.

Like the idea of the plywood brace. Looking forward to updates and good luck with the move.
