My idea for the pond i am making . Will it work or not ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I say buy a diaphragm pump (a large one!). Then you can flip the 100g one upside down and prop it up partway under the waterlevel. Use the diaphragm pump to take the air out and viola! Upside down fish tank filled with water!

Whats the chainsaw in the pond?

Dont be like that , please .

Im sorry but on a small scale it's sort of hard to draw a perfect looking Awo' .

Any one else ? Got any input for this idea i have .

I think it will work. I do something similar except I just have my whole filter above the pond draining from top through media and then out through holes in the bottom of diy filter. I just wanted less connections and fewer points for leaks and things.

great idea! here's what i would do to maximize simplicity and affectiveness.
first always try to avoid having the pump being the first thing dirty water sees especially with a monster tank, all it does is turn everything into gravy and make it that much harder to filter out and it clogs your mech much faster! to solve this one overflowthe water from the pond into the filter with atleast two overflows to account for clogging. i would do this by driling a bulkhead or two in the side of the pond and maybe filter if the top of it is higher then the water level, but you could do it with a couple larger DIY pvc siphoning overflows as well. then put you return pump at the bottom of the filter or the top, depending on waterflow, just wherever it will only get clean water. plumb it out and split it so one return empties into the upper tank and one into the pond with a ball valve on the upper tank return. then on the overflow down to the main tank make a diy siphoning overflow that drains directly down. can you drill the upper tank, that would be ideal for draining it. i'm advocating the DIY overflows to save money.

awesome idea and cool shaped pond, i did the math and came up with 942 us gallons.

do we get to see real pictures?!?!?!?!!!!

I hear wghat you say , buy having thing your filter above the pond going straight back into the pond , but what i am hoping is to have it to go into the the tank , filter the tank at the same time as the pond and the go from the tank back into the pond .

Thanks for your comment .

The idea of it going into the filter and having two outlets , one going into the tank , one striaght into the pond sound good , soemeone had said about doing that before . As i am wanting to have a few fish in the tank is that the pressure of the water all going stright into the tank would be a little strong for some fish and too split the outlets will let me have a wider choice of fish i could put in the tank .

Drilling the tank is one thing i dont what to do !

Thanks for working out the amout of water it will hold , and pictures will be up as soon as i have got it finished as i am still saving a little money for this and that i am still in the planning part of building the pond ( i have got the shed and insulated the shed but still thinking thing over for the pond ) , asking loads of questions so i get thing right and make as little mistakes as posible .

About 785 Uk Gals then , i have converted it into that from the 942 you say it is , which is US gals ?

Yer , i am wanting to still use the tank to keep fish in , maybe a couple of medium/ largeish Cichlids , maybe a Pleco or two .
I'm curious about the design, why not design it square, It would be an easier construction? Also you said this is going to be in a shed, a med-large shed goes at about 8x6, your design is 8x6?

Thanks alot that gives me something to think about .

But i think my way would be best , only as for me it's easier to do and i wont have to worry about cutting the linner for a bottom drain .

Thanks anyways , i will deffently think about tho .
No problem, just given you an alternative to think about, I appreciate the concern about cutting the liner(sleepless nights etc.;)), I was shall I say more than concerned when I did mine, if I ever did it again it would not worry me at all, it's easy you just need to get through the mental block that's telling you it's wrong.

Just remember there is no right or wrong way to build a pond and filter it:) Keep posting the stuff and if anything looks like it's way off someone will tell you:)

Thanks the , the design the shape that i am thinking of is so it make the most of the shed size , but still give a little room for me to walk in the shed , also i am wanting to put a couple of large fish including my Silver Awo' in there so the bigger the pond the better . IMO .

I understand now, an 8x6 shed with roughly a 8x6 pond right?

Again curious, so this a wooden shed it outside right? Or a metal one, heated and outside and your in North yorks? What are you planning on insulating it with, your going to waste a ton of cash on heating if you don't?

Not picking a fight(I've just read that back) just curious?
