My juvenile Sajica

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Guys are looking good!
I agree with what's been stated here. See how tough they are on each other, if it's too much a divider in the 20 may help, or could just say "F it" and move em to the 75 earlier. Longer QT is better but certainly not the end of the world if you don't keep em in there for too long, especially since you ended up getting a pre-matched pair by surprise

Yep. I tried breeding a pair of these guys in a 40. The male killed one mate and nearly another. Put the nearly killed female in a 135 with a bunch of other stuff (Severum, heterospila growouts, etc) along with a subdominant male sajica and they spawned several times. Took over one half of a 6 foot tank but the male didn't kill her after spawning. Ended up selling the pair and keeping the first male in the 40 as he was a better specimen

Thanks! I was hoping you’d see this thread since you’ve helped me so much in the other one. There’s certainly some tension in there but nothing too extreme as of now. I mainly just wanted to get ahead of it once I saw a pair forming and claiming territory. I think with all of the advice I’ll hope to get to about the 2-3 week quarantine time and reevaluate then. At that point at least the quarantine time wasn’t completely pointless, and if I have to move them so be it. At the same time if it’s not any worse at that point, I’ll extend quarantine as much as possible.

Geez, one time I read they’re much more docile than convicts etc....then I read stuff like this. Hopefully I have better luck than you did!

This has been my experience with amatitlania species as well... single pair in a tank, male kills female. Pair in a larger tank with other cichlids they can defend against = happy female. I think the males of this genus are just aggressive little guys, and with nothing to distract them from their female, they turn to wife beaters. Keep them pre-occupied with the other fish and it turns out better.

I hope I didn’t get in over my head considering my tank is only 75 gallons. If the pair takes half or more of that space it doesn’t leave a ton of space for 2 additional females. Plus I’m sure by the time they reach full size I’ll be pushing it bio load wise, i May have to up my water change frequency. But best I can do is try and set it up for success. Worst case I can re home all the females, or re home the male and keep multiple females....guess time will tell.

I had success with a panamensis pair (generally a bit more aggressive than sajica IMO) in a 90 gallon, pair + 2 others, think the extras were males. I think the 75 should work, just include plenty of caves and plants etc for the others to hide in if they are being targeted. And keep in mind they will definitely be chased a bit, that's the whole point, to allow the male to vent some of his aggression on other fish and not just his female.

I will say this. I've got the single male in his 40b now with swords, sae's, two baby hoplo cats, an l183 pleco and kuhli loaches and he's a perfect community fish. He's just rough on females. I think you'll be fine in a 75 especially with other targets. I just don't think this species does well when it's just a pair without any other cichlids to target.

ok well i feel a bit better after reading these haha. I have no problem having other fish in there with the purpose of being chased a bit, as long as they're not getting their brains beat in. Hopefully the nice group of danios and a few swords helps to distract them and keep the aggression to a minimum. I go back and forth with wanting to add a pleco or catfish of some sort...but not sure i have the room to do it. I am starting to see some brown algae growing on the rocks which makes me want to attempt a bristle nose or something similar, I'm hesitant because whenever I've had them before i could never take looking at the giant pile of poo below their cave haha

embrace the algae. i don't like it on my glass but i let it grow on the rocks and wood. if not i'd just go insane

or get a few SAE. I have a few in my 40 with the my male. He leaves them alone
