thanks for the support. im pretty open to any suggestions any of you may have and i do take them all into consideration

Keep the depth 5 feet. Freezing should not be an issue but I doubt the water in the bottom will drop below 55 degrees if you are deep enough! I have to agree with the comments....I built a 1600 gallon waterfall pond in my yard for cold water fish.....Cost over 1000. for just the liner and filter and rocks......did all the work myself with hand tools.....took 4 months. I am guessing the heating system and proper filtration will set you back 10x your budget! I would start with cold water and add heating in another year if budget allows......make sure the pond looks like a pro landscaping job and your folks may embrace it!! (of course the plants around my pond cost over $1000. and the pond is only a 10 foot oval 5 feet deep!)
 
I think I will do it with no heating for the first year though and just try native species like perch and bass and blue catfish and such to see how it goes. Hopefully the shovelnose, arowana, and pacu don't outgrow my tank but then though, which they probably will
 
Sounds like you got it worked out, you got a liner, filter for 200, stuff to dig with. You might be able to get it under 600. Talk to local well diggers and other jobs that invovle digging, when I was working on my pond, one guy said when he dug, hed toss the rock in his truck and just dump them in a pile. Most will let you help yourself to them.

I'm actually planning on us digging it ourselves. Me, my dad, and a few friends. I'm doing it out in an open field away from trees, roots, and pipes. We live out in the country so we've got the space to do this kind of stuff lol

Gotta' build up some muscle somehow, am I right lol. It'd probably feel better to build it with your own two hands anyways then to hire someone to do it for you
