A lot of the posts are a little harsh....really harsh...for a 5 year old. They don't think through the end results of their actions at that age and she wouldn't have known that too much food would ruin the water quality and kill them. In her mind she may have been "helping you out". Sitting her down for a talk was the right thing to do.
I can remember actually fishing in my fathers tanks when I was little. Or adding PH adjuster into the tank because I saw my father do it
I guess at the end of the day, it's really up to us to teach our kids about our fish and supervise them and any other kids in our homes around our tanks. Children try and mimic what they see us do around the tanks and that includes feeding them.
So far I've come home to spilled food when I didn't put it out of reach but the tops of my tanks were too high for feeding.
