Personally I like working with Birch, Poplar, Cherry, and Maple, but out of those the Birch is probably the cheapest...
Thanks, good to know. I assumed it wouldn't look to good with stain. Buying those expensive pieces of wood makes me nervous! They look very pretty though :D

yeah, its hard shelling out 3, 4, or 5x as much for the same size boards, but once you see what they turn in to, you never want to use the cheap ones again...
