My Muskie

Not to totally derail this thread, but just to demonstrate how truly large these fish can get, back in 1974 when I caught my first Muskie on hook & line, the legal limit for size was I believe 30". Anything under that had to be released. I was young & stupid or I would have released mine, as it was still just a baby at only 33". (84cm)

The minimum limit in my area for artificially stocked musky is 40". These fish are big and need equally massive enclosures.

I just checked, where I caught mine (Lake St. Clair) the legal size limit is now 42", at least on the US side. I caught mine on the Canadian side where the Detroit River joined up with Lake St. Clair. I grew up a stones throw from the river/lake.

Males are mature at 16-18" femails at 20-22" 30" seems fairly common as a cut off point probably to ensure they have a chance to breed, I understand that these fish can get very big but there is basically no info that I can find about people raising pike to over 24" in captivity, and dealing with a 2' fish isn't impossible thier calm non active fish who can tolerate a wide range of conditions and easily accept frozen food, I've kept large groupers and other saltwater fish over 2' long and they were a way bigger handful than I expect a pike would ever become, but don't take my word for it all I have is experience to back it

In case you haven't figured it out yet, this topic isn't about Northern Pike - it's about Muskie.

According to data from Michigan Natural Resources, female Muskie don't spawn for their first time until they are approx 7 to 10 years old, at 36+ inches.

I was just quoting a pike study done by the fiseries, but about the musky you got me there, you win the Internet good bye forever

I have crabs didn't post anything wrong. a muskie is in the pike family. I believe he might have been referring to the whole family.

Come on lady's chill it. It doesn't look proper when females fight. Lol I'm just kidding. For real chill guys. He'll I already quit commenting on on the cichla bass category. Every time I said anything there was some wise asses that think the peacock bass gods and just talked crap to anyone they can. This is about experience and info. You both are probably right. I just broke up the fight at the bar didn't I.

Yeah, well done, except you're about 6 weeks late to the party.

Was either hatchery ever mentioned? I know it was in Ohio and Pennsylvania but then thread was derailed.
