My new 2600 gallon plywood tank project

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
DO NOT coat your bacground with resin, I made a fiberglass + concrete background that was GREAT but then I decided to coat with fiberglass resin to prevent the breakdown over time and the PH swing.

When I put the resin on I put 2 coats on with a brush, and it trapped air between the resin and concrete, not bubbles but it came out as a milkey white film when under water!! i'll post some pics whne i get to my PC.

My 2 cents .. I would use a thick layer of concrete... TheDeeB used a thin layer like paint. I used a concrete mix with fiberglass threds in it, supposedly stronger. but your mixture w/ resin sounds like it accomplishes the same thing. GL!!!

Looks great cant wait to see it filled up:)

I used hydrolic concrete mix. (It doesn't have any gravel in it so its easy to work with.) Has held up fine so far. But I did put 6 or more layers on the big pieces. It worked really well. I rapped on one of them with a screwdriver to see how strong they are. Didn't chip it, so I do think if you did a whole lot of coats you would be fine with almost any fish.

My only suggestion is to get cheapo 1$ brushes. So you can wash them out and reuse them until they give out. Or you forget to wash them out...... I have gone through like 4 already. (on this new background I am doing.)

I can't wait to see that thing get a test fill.

Assuming the leak test goes off without a hitch then the next steps will be:

Drain
Install exhaust fan for moisture
Install visqueen on upper walls
Install plumbing
Install lighting
Install divier wall for sump area
Make background
Install background
Re-fill
Start filtration
Finish filter cycle
Place a few fish in for a test
Move over remaining fish
Tear down 1500
Finish basement and front of new tank

All by next weekend. (Just kidding)
