are they aggressive or timid? they lookm great by the way

i think they are agressive, they have little figths and chase each other througth the tank... they also chase the peacock in there... i dont know how theyll act when i move them with other fish... i dont know if they will be agressive then, buy they are for sure not timid at all! they always out and when i come to the tank they come close to me and beg for food :)
they are very entertaining.
i think they'r both males for the looking of their vents plus they both growing same speed..

why stay away from bloodworms?? theyre one of the best foods, no?

Bloodworms... the best food? No way! There is next to no nutritional value for them feeding them bloodworms. I feed mine spectrum flake and Marine -A- w/ spirulina.

Too much blood worms will eventually constipate the EB's and then kill them.

I usually give them BW's once or twice a month along w/ the occasional brine shrimp, beefheart and plankton. These should only be fed as a treat, not everyday. Especially with EB's. There delicate enough as it is.

Blue Dempseys are prone to parasitic illness… and there are rumors that bloodworms can contain parasites… Although no high grade food, bloodworms or otherwise, should contain parasites…

Erik may have other reasons to discourage bloodworms and I’m interested to hear them if he does… I’ve personally fed young Blue Dempseys quite a bit of Hikari brand bloodworms with no ill results… I should also note I used UV sterilizers on the tanks I did this in…

I have no real theory, just alot of bad luck with feeding them BW's. It took me a little while to put 2 and 2 together. Everytime I fed them bw's on a day on, day off basis, eventually there behavior would change (stop eating, swim less, hide by the heater, etc), and then they would perish. Ever since I just about stopped w/ the bw's, I've noticed that my EB's seem much happier and healthier. I would still get that occasional one that I would have to hospitalize, but I haven't lost one yet ever since.

After seeing you mention running a UV sterilizer, I decided to bite the bullet and get one. I notice a GREAT difference in water quality running the UVS. I've had it on my 125 for about 8 months now and to this day haven't dealt with a sick EB. Attention to a quality diet and pristine water quality, I think is vital in the survival of this fish.

I'd like to add as well that in this tank I have 8 EB's and 10 BG's with hope that someone would pair off. For almost a year it seemed like I had all males but ever since adding that uvs, I've had 3 pairs created, along with 7 spawns. This species of fish has been quite a challenge for me and I'm enjoying every minute of it :)

would frozen blood worms be okay?

I have no proof but heard even frozen can contain parasites.

i dont know ive heard they are bad ..... i havent used uv at all.. just a filter and heater.. i do 30% wc every week, they are in a 30g. i have only fed them new life spectrum mini pellets, it was like 7 bucks for a little container, i havent fed them anything else, i feed them like 3 or 4 times a day they love those pellets and have stayed healthy, i hope they stay that way
they have double their size in like 5 weeks..
:)

Spectrum is a great product. If that is whats working for you with these guys then definitely stick with it. Quality food, pristine water quality and a stress free environment will allow these guys to reach adulthood. Lots of luck with them.

Spectrum and Hikari are the only products I will feed my fish.

I'm only working on personal experience, but I stopped feeding bloodworms - - based on some comments similar to what ErikfromNJ is saying - - and I don't regret it.

yeah, my fish loved 'em, but ever since I stopped I have just not had as many problems, e.g., indigestion or parasites. maybe it's a coincidence, maybe I'm just reading into it. but I'm comfortable with my decision

I feed my fish mainly Hikari and Omega One . . . I used to feed only Spectrum, and I still think it's a great product, but most of the foods I use are floating, and most Spectrum foods are sinking. I still use their sinking wafers

My father in law was a professional breeder from the mid 60's to the early 90's. He told me right from the start of a new aquarium to feed both type of foods. Sinking and floating and to always feed both together. I took his advice and have been doing it ever since. My fish will eat no matter where the food is. My common pleco will eat floating pellets when they're near the glass hehe

Almost every well kept dry food ''shouldn't'' cause any health issues with your fish. I feel once you introduce and continuously feed carnivorish type foods on a daily basis is when the problems arise.

Those EBJDs look great. Their temperament and diet sounds real close to my lil EBJDs. The larger of my 2 is about 3" now (this is also the dominant one), the other is probably 2.5".

They spend the majority of the time together. But there is mild aggression occassionally (the dominant one bullying the other a bit, but nothing serious, the worst i've seen is a slightly nipped tail). But I noticed the dominant one had a nip or two on one of his fins (which has since healed), so the aggression doesn't seem to be completely 1-sided.

They mostly get NLS 1mm cichlid pellets. But they also get the food thats intended for their tankmates (Ken's Tropical Flakes, Ken's Meat Wafers, Ken's Earthworm Sticks, O.S.I.'s Shrimp Pellets). Next week I'm going to order the 2mm NLS Thera A pellets just as a precaution against parasites. I don't run any UV sterilizers either. Just filters/heater/powerhead

If you're interested, I have a thread up..."picked up 2 1" EBJDs, questions" in this forum. I posted update pics last night.

edit: On a side note, I don't feed mine blood worms, live, frozen, or freeze-dried. I've always been under the impression (accurately or not) that feeding blood worms too often can give your fish too much protein, which it can't digest quick enough and will lead to bloat/etc. Plus, my EBJDs don't really come to the top of the tank for feeding. They're used to the sinking NLS and other sinking pellets now.
