Not gonna lie, i've been looking for a sun conure for about 2 months and you and Phoenix are definitely the inspiration. Issue is my parents, they do not like birds. So I my have to wait until I move out. But have place I can get them and the whole setup for free. Theres a bird rescue like an our from my house and I might be going in the next week or 2 just to see if my dad likes him. Hopefully it persuades him:grinno:

Birds are worth it, once you get used to the noise of course!

The key is letting the bird pick you.

My first visit to the shop he was the one to come to me, climb up my arm and chill on my shoulder. There were several other conure, cockatiels, etc there. The best bonds are built this way. Some birds like men only, some women only, some don't care either way.

Remember his/her cage is it's castle and until you have a very strong bond, don't do anything in it's cage while the bird is in it. The cage is it's safe haven.

Birds need 10 to 12 hours sleep time in a dark room.

Remember beaks are the first multi-tool. It's a beak, a hand, a foot, a pry bar, a pair of scissors etc etc. Don't be afraid of it but respect it, a Conure can lop off a finger.

Helpful info for any hookbill birds.

Conures are often called mini macaws. Being a 100gram version of a normally 3lb bird.

This time I got the whole bath. Last was mid way or so. He is doing his spring molt now so loving his bath and head scratches. He let's me pick off the cases of his new features now.

I love how he sits underneath the water stream heheheh.

How do you train these things not to bite? Had a friend with a killer bird who liked to draw blood. Don’t think his bird was trained much at all but don’t trained birds make a mistake once in a while and take a chomp?

When birds are not sure of what they are stepping onto they may test with a bite to see if object if strong enough for them to stand on. If the person gets afraid and pulls away, the bird might bite harder....

If the object is to far away they could hook onto it to pull it closer, not bite, but use the natural curve in the beak to hook onto it. Again if a person is using a finger and gets scared and pulls away, could cause a bite.

I personally have not done any training with Phoenix. He was taught stepping up by the person's at the bird store I got him from.

Like I mentioned before, some birds might not like men, some may not like females. Some don't care at all. Really depends on the birds individual disposition. Just like cichlids, each bird has its own personality.

I feel when getting a bird you should let the bird pick you. This is what I did with Phoenix and it's paid off in spades.

If your friend wants to learn how to train a bird I really suggest looking into Birdtricks on YouTube.

Jamie and her husband are both experts in behavior, free flight, how to train, feeding etc.
