MY NEW FLORIDA GAR, I NEED SOME CONFIRMATION

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I see I've come under some heavy fire for my ID comment.

I was thinking of ID'ing a small Florida vs a Spotted as opposed to a Florida vs a Gator. The experts that I referenced were actually you guys, due to a thread I had subscribed to prior to purchasing my Florida, where several gar-forum regulars were discussing the trouble with IDing someones gar as a Florida or a Spotted. For some reason my memory told me that thread was about Gator's, so that's why I said what I said here.

Thanks for the ridicule, though. People do mix things up, as it turns out, so maybe the experts shouldn't jump down a new keepers throat when he gets mixed up. :naughty:

ull learn. dont worry it wasnt really personal, its just a very "touchy" subject with us. lol. ull get used to it and even join in, in time

please understand that your initial comment had plenty of bite to it too...especially if you are saying plenty of "the experts" screwed up. with a statement like that, it helps to have your facts straight before pointing fingers.

original comment:
I've seen even the most knowledgable gar specialists mess up IDing between Florida's and Gator's at such a small size. What is making everyone so sure?

for those of us who study fishes for a living, you're making some strong statements, so i would expect to get a response in turn. that being said, i reviewed my response and don't think it would be classified as jumping down someone's throat.

gar ID is tough (i've been there, and am still learning new things), but in general, reading before posting helps avoid confusion, pointless arguments, and flaming a lot of the time--

No worries guys, it was my error, not yours. I'm sure in time I will do a little ROFL'ing myself. Lord knows I've done it about people talking about Marbled Pim's (my big boy).

Anyways, back to gars!

yeah, more specifically, what are you're plans to make sure the gator doesn't eat the Florida gar in about 1-2 months? the gator is already bigger than that FL, and will have a much faster growth rate...not even accounting for aggression damage, the FL will be in danger of full on predation very soon. just a forewarning--

I know of this precaution... they are both in a 75 currently but I have a 55 in storage for when the size difference varies too much...

My last Gator was 22inches 7 lbs when he passed... Grew 18 inches in 7 months. I know full well what the gator can and will do, and i LOVE them. I am currently in the process of looking to buy a house, so when that happens, the misses( or soon to be lol) will probably be investing in a 500gal.

to the OP... be ready for a much different gar IMO. Much more active, aggressive, and growth rate.

this is my old gar... we called him Lich. The face is like that due to a bad tank when we first got him... his skin was healing tremendously. it is not HITH.
