I believe you are right. But the royal can still get to 32" in a home tank.
As I've read, there is only one species of fish known as the nile perch, Lates niloticus. Lates however does have 9 species within the genus, none of which have the common name or prefix "Royal". Your fish if a nile perch has the potential to become this if you see it through to the end of its life and its max genetic potential

Please do note, that though this is the current world record it is only because this species has been dangerously over fished in its native range. This once was the norm.

dude looks exactly the same as a barramundi, odd how fish from the other side of the world evolved to look exactly the same

They are a similar species that both grow huge.

Same genus, they share a common ancestor and fill relatively the same niche in their respective home ranges. Its a good body design and if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Reminds me of siniperca chuatsi. I had a red one for about a week until I finally got an ID on it. Then I rushed it back to the pet store and told them it got so huge. They shrugged and gave me store credit. I feel sorry for whoever bought it after me! Unless they really have a pond for it.

Hey Bud,

I was just reading your Nile Perch thread, how is the fish doing? and chance of a photo update? I kept a couple of species years ago, looking to import some soon. I used to add salt, (tiny amounts) are you?

all the best with this awesome fish!
