I recently swapped out my mbuna for a pair of JD's (EBJD male and a regular female) both around 5" (female's a little smaller), and it's been almost a week now and they are still skittish and sit in their cave all day, except it seems when I'm posting about them as they are out and about atm. Every time someone walks by the tank they freak out and dart for their cave, and when I did a cleaning today I had to take the rock that makes the cave out and they just sat by a plant trying to hide. Is this normal?!? These guys get to 8+ inches and they're wussies?!

Now, when I got the EBJD he was a trade in at our local fish store b/c he was the smallest guy and was gettin picked on, and had some torn up fins etc, so I got him for a good deal ($35 for a 5" EBJD? yes plz) and have in the week or so he's been here he's healed up really well and is even getting some awesome trailers on his fins, so I have high hopes for him, but I don't know what to do about their behavior!

The things I have tried so far are: I put in 7 zebra danios for dithers, this seemed to help for the two days they were in there before they got eaten, so it was a crapshoot there, they were all gone in 2 days haha. I also added some more plants for cover, but it's still the same result; they only come out when I post about them (or so it seems lol).

The female too is definitely the less skittish of the two: she's always nudging him and darkening up real well (that is breeding behavior, right?). And he CONSTANTLY, and I mean constantly, has to be following her around 80% of the time, like a little puppy dog!

Here are some pics to help (I assume I'm right on the genders, I've been searching alot so hopefully I'm right).

Is everything OK with these guys?

Yes Jds can be really skittish at times . Mine freak if I move them to different tanks nice blue by the way. Just give them time add a flowerpot to the tank . If they start fanning each other then they should pair up.

yes it normal for him to be skittish mine 5" EBJD does that too.

That's my current setup, the big slate cave is there main hideout (they're actually in the right corner tinkering in the pic). Think that is enough? Idk if I'd like the clay pot in there, no offense. The female was fanning the male, but he doesn't really do anything back, he seems thickheaded lol. Is he not mature enough to be thinkin about breeding?

Would having some dithers in there really help? The danios just buzzed around the top before they became snacks. I was thinking maybe some fire mouths or something? I really don't want to have to add anything to the tank, as I like having the pair in there, but my 55 is my biggest tank and I'm not gonna have fish that sit in a cave all day in there, :/

put another female JD in there with him that should help.

Will the females fight, or will he just be like "oh yeah!"? I'm kinda partial to this female, she's pretty cool haha.
no they should be fine as all as there the same size.

alright, cool, I'll pick one up tomorrow. So the big reason was just not enough action going on in the tank with just the two? Would the firemouths be a bad idea or...?
