So why not measure his tank water right there and then? At least you could gain more knoweledge and better your guesswork.

I don't have a test kit. I normally get it done at my lfs (5mins away).

Often they go on sale when they are close (closer) to the expiration - a standard practice. May not be such a good idea but may be ok if you use it up within 0.5-1 year.

The API Master freshwater kit is $24 from petsolutions.com - where I have been buying mine for many years. Comparable to the price of a baby RTC...

The shipping is more than the price of the test kit itself.

Something does not add up. My shipping was always $5.99 for the kit alone or free if I bought more. Shipping is free on orders over $49.

I'm in Canada and your in the us. Shipping to canada is almost always killer. Unfortunately the free shipping deal is for us only.
