My new tank (first real MONSTER)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ever think of bowfin?

you can catch them in ohio too, not sure if its legal, but i know they are in the ohio river systems, ive been wanting to goto the ohio river just north of huntington WV and fish for bowfin at the green bottom swamp wildlife refuge.

also think of doing north american native fish, you wont have to spend the extra $$$ to heat the tank with those, i have eastern dollar sunfish, and longear sunfish in my native tanks, along with green sunfish, and white suckers.

there are tons of beautiful north american fish, along with redfin pickerel, and grass pickerel.

Go for a rubbermade stock tub for a DIY filter:)

Levi's got the right idea.. get a rubbermaid from the farm store.. they sell one that's like 100g's or so that would work well for this ..

I had thought that but it seems that rays and aros are about the only thing people want to stock in huge tanks. And that just not me. I mean that WAS my first thought but I just can't bring myself to the idea yet. I was also thinking gars but most nice gars that I know of will still ourgrow this tank. unless I can work something out with a bass proshop I got near to take a big gar off my hands once it outgrows the tank I don't want to do that either. I was thinking lungfish but after I found they are not real friendly with tankmates that idea got shot down. about the only ancent fish I could think of I might have to have is a albino clown knife. or a royal clown knife.

I am leaning twards peanuts idea of a SA community. with some Pbass as the center piece. But I am still not totally sold on that either.

Alot of newer people are amazed by arow's/rays combo so you'll hear this alot. Not that there is anything wrong with either species but most times you'll hear people reccommending these because of hearsay not because of actual ownership of these fish. (edit: except for miles.. lol he reccommends from experiance)

Overall that's a steal of a deal. 1k.. wow!! amazing. Most important part of this tank is to do you. Pick fish and species that you like.. If you want an albino clown knife and it suits your plans then go for it. GL with it. I'm sure any fish in that tank will look amazing. :)

A bowfin hasn't been a thought yet. I am just not really impressed with natives.

I think if I get a chance this weekend I am going to go to TSC and look at the stock tanks. I would love to get one thats big but not big enough that it won't fit into the stand. I work with a guy who has hogs and If I can remeber to ask ill find out about how much his tanks cost. Ill have to do some DIY search to find out how to turn one into a good sump. But that won't be to hard.

awesome.... cant wait to see it set up and running....

Unless I can use the filters that are with this tank. It will take me a while to get the DIY sump built. But I have been toying with the idea of setting it up with what it has now. and at least letting what bio media the current sump can hold culture. Then as I build the new sump I can allways just move the bio media add more and then sell the old sump. And with the bio media being established the tank won't crash.

But itf I wait to build the new sump it will be awhile before I get it up and running.

Ok I just got back from the guys house that is selling me the tank. We finished the deal and he let me take home everything but the tank and stand. ( I had no way to get it here) I did however get the sumps that it had. and three pondmaster model 12 pumps. I'm not sure why there is three but there is. Also there was a small trickle box and a proteen skimmer. (at least that's what he said it was lol) I do know now that I need a whole new sump. The one that the tank has is just WAY WAY to small for almost 600gal. So I think ill be cleaning the two tanks up that I got and more then likly sell them off here to differ the cost of the new sump.

Also A big plus today he gave me a BIG ASS box of bioballs. I mean there has to be at least 30 gals. of these damn things. Now I won't have to go buy any.

I did find out that the tank was built by Dutch Aquarium Systems. and is an older tank but it looks well built.

Ihave more of a project infront of me then I originally thought but that's fine It just won't have water in it as soon as I thought.

If I get lucky then Ill send you guys some more pics. but till then I got some reasurch to do on this damn sump I have to build. lol
