My new tank (first real MONSTER)

ok Thanks to neo I got one of my pics to work finally. The other will take a few to get on here but this is a general graphic of what I plan on doing with the filtration. for this monster. The other grapic is a side view b/c the bio chamber will be put on a small stand and the bulkhead for the overflow poweroutage box will be as high as I can get it. also there will be a DIY trickle tray on top of the bio chamber.

This is what the side view will end up looking like. I wanted to put the bio-chamber up onto a small stand so that way I could have less water in that chamber. The hole in the return chamber is going to be at the top of the tank. As close as I can get it to the frame. so that way the tank has to be FULL before I get water in the poweroutage tank.

The only thing that I see that I might change is either the size of the bulkheads or the number of them. Since I have not yet ordered my drillbits. I can still change the size. About the only thing I might want to do is upgrade to 2" Like zennzzo said earlier. Or just insted of drilling 2-3 hols per tank make it 3-4 holes. Now I think I am leaning twords the bigger bulkheads. simlply b/c I don't want to drill a bunch of hole and take the bigger chance of breaking the tank.

Tonight I am going to go pickup my third 55 (or so i'm told) A lady at work is giving it to me for free. Then If I have the time ill take some pics of the three tanks that I have and post the pics.

So in the end I'll have in the ballpark of a 165gal sump. That sounds alot better then the like 75gal or less that came with it. lol

Well that's the propossed filtration. Let me know what you guys think.

I would be careful about drilling those 55s. 99.9% of all 55G tanks are made out of tempered glass on all sides. If you drill tempered glass, you are in for a mess. i would think about getting something different. If you get about any other size tank, you won't have to deal with tempered glass.

****! I didn't think about that I just did some looking and it seems like you're right. Why on earth are 55s the only tank thats got all panels tempered?!

I allreaady got two tanks and i'm picking up my third today. CRAP. Now what do I do.


Unless someone has some 45s I think i'm screwed. (for now.) a 45 is the closest thing to a 55 that's not over 13" wide. anything wider will not fit in the door of the stand.
 
Ok I keep hearing about a power outage sump...is this because water will back up through the pump if the power goes out?...if so, just put an inline "check valve" on the line running from the pump to the tank...
 
I have never seen a sheck that big. if I run a check into any lines running to the sump it will have to be like 1"id If you got a link to a check that big let me know I would deffinily use that insted.

But where would you put that check? with a power outage chamber. if the power goes out then once the two other chambers are full then the water will just go into the third chamber.




On a side note. If I run into problems drilling these temepered 55s then I think what i'll do is get replacement panles for the 55 then drill the no-tempered replacements. It will take more time but I would still rather have 55 gal chambers then anything smaller and I allready got three 55s so I might as well use then.

The check valve goes on the line from the pump to the tank...it checks the direction of flow (water can only flow from the pump toward the tank, and not backflow in case of power outage)

Home depot has them from 1/2"- 1 1/2" (3/4"=$7.00 and a 1"=$11.00)

DO NOT even try to holesaw/cut/drill tempered glass bro, as soon as you breech the surface of the glass it will drop into a zillion tiny pieces...

replace the panels first then drill them
 
Sorry about the tempered glass thing koop. If I knew that I would have told you before you bought that 55 from me. Why do you have to drill it? I've seen tons of wet drys that were never drilled. Couldn't you just re-design your filters without drilling?
 
I have 2 40G I would be willing to trade you straight up. That is, if you want to drive to Indy.
