How about a species of Spathodus?? just my .02

Hmmmm.... Spathodus. Marlieri or erythrodon? Interesting fish, I'll have to look into them, but I was at my LFS today and they had n. brichardi there and I never realized how small they actually are. But, I'll take spathodus into consideration too, my only problem is the fact that they'd be sharing the bottom with multis so it might cause territorial issues. Also, the fish concentration would be focused on the bottom half of the tank, rather than the 12", which is why I was looking more for fish that swim in the open waters along with the rocky formations.

UPDATE:
Okay, well I finally broke down my dad to take me to the LFS today and I brought my hard earned $50 just in case (didn't plan on spending that much:(). So I was looking around (btw, we stopped at a Petco which was much closer but that place disgusted me) and found the submersible filter that I was looking for, but lets just say it didn't quite fit the budget. So I went with a sponge filter that is supposed to be for a 20 gallon tank, rather than a 10 so that I can get that more surface area to work with. I went in looking for plain ammonia, but the guy working there said there was a faster way to start the nitrogen cycle and he recommended me like 4 ounces of this nasty redish brownish looking liquid (I forgot the name) that he said was plain live bacteria that would have my tank cycled in 3-4 days. So I took his offer since I'm on a tight schedule I found out (going fishing in mammoth :D) But he said I needed an ammonia source. He recommended that I get this huge as like 5 -5 1/2 inch koi (which in reality isn't that big compared to the baby arapaima they had) in order to get the most ammonia out. I also bought a nitrite or nitrate () test kit. When I went to the cashier, it ended up bing $49.?? :WHOA:. What the hell, when did this stuff get so frken expensive? There goes the hard earned allowance money that I had to raise by spending less on cafeteria food at school the last month and a half :irked:. Anyways, I set it up and here's what it looks like. I took apart the bucket that I had set up to temporarily house my corydora and betta and put the betta in its own bowl since I thought it was too fragile and the koi looks like he's going insane whenever the lights goes on always smacking into the walls :screwy:. BTW, the cup full of gravel is from the bucket that was running, so I figured it had some beneficial bacteria to offer (Anything to speed up the cycling process ;))

Sorry for the lengthy anecdote, but I did alot today :headbang2. Tell me what you think and what I should improve on.

woah, is the koi in the 10 gallon? thats pretty cruel, they need a rather large lake/pond or at minimum a large aquarium.

ino, ino it is and I questioned the guy at the LFS for quite a while about it and he said that if its just for a week (which it is cause I'm just using him to cycle) then it would be okay. Trust me, I flinched at the idea, but figured that it was only for a week and I am watching him carefully. Please don't hate me, I'm starting to hate myself :(

'salright, as long as u know, where u gonna put it after the week?

Sounds like the deal was to return the fish?

I have to say, the pictures all the way up until the last one made this tank look a lot bigger than it really was lol.

it would of been cheaper just use feeder fish for a cycle. u can get big 3'' ones for $0.50.... koi dont deserve a 10 gallon... the LFS guy is just milking u....

how much did the koi cost u?

Feeder goldfish didnt look too good, they looked on the verge of sick. The koi was 15, but when I give it back, he's giving me back 50%

Ouch, that is high for a fish just to cycle if it survives. Feeders work well and if they look sick, you can always go to another LFS. I personally do fishless cycle with pure ammonia. Cheaper than the fish you have and YOU control what the ammo level is between start and finish. Just my two cents.
