That's not a festae. That's a barred midas / rd hybrid you have there. Honestly, I don't see how it looks like a firemouth when the colors are pretty different.
i think your wrong. my festas looked just like it at when they were 2 inches. no red at early stage but showed the black barring and bigger black down through the middle. the eyespot i think is a dead giveaway. look how high it sets on that fishes tailfin. the rds doesnt look like that. at least my rd anyway. im not saying im 100 percent right cause the 2 do look alike when they are small. but im going to stick with that real high eyespot. just going to have to wait and see

you're right. I've never seen a firemouth that is light gray with a broken, dark horizontal bar and red under the chin and gills.

my bad. I've definately never seen a grey RD.

thats because you've never been to a good fish store. Mostly all amphilophus stuff is barred when younger, especially if its within a couple generations of being wild caught. Some of it stays barred, most of it doesn't. The red devils you've been seeing are so far from the wild theres no way to tell if they're 100% or not.

f2 (grand child of a wildcaught pair) midas
