My outdoor cat tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
im planning 2-3 channel cats and possibly some bluegill/perch. theyre plentifull at my local lake. the goldfish are just a temporary to prove out the system, however i catch 1 ft + channels & blues in the upcoming spring on a regular basis and plan on housing some large cats =)

Are those rocks sitting directly on the glass bottom? If so, thats gonna be a problem.

thats 539 gallon brimmed mate, lovely big tank! good luck

yeah, 6'x3'x4' comes to 2000 liters or 530 US gal, not 250.

the 55 gal sump worries me having no support at the 4 corners. i don't think it is designed to be supported like that, only in the middle. It is always very highly advised to have any tank supported at the four corners first and foremost for a reason.

Big fish will throw/roll the rocks around, may break the glass.

Also, what's you locale?

oooo thanks for the pointer, i didnt even consider the fish messing with the rocks. i'm on the hunt for a large piece of local driftwood, i think i'll replace the rocks with just that. i should probably move the sump, was considering using gravity for the skimmer down to the sump then doing a bucket with a small waterfall for more surface agitation

Yeah, I was thinking about it too. It looks like it is not on the main slab in the picture - hence appears uneven but that's likely an illusion... but how it is supported is indeed very important.

hey sorry about the delays tank is filtering down well, will have some updated pics soon. yes it is off by about 2 inches. my condo was built in the 60s so its not the straightest anymore hahaha. however it was much worse, i leveled it out and purposely left slightly off. i covered the opposite end of the tank with chicken wire and plan on placing some fixed ledges etc. there to accommodate a turtle or two

sorry its been a few days, got the fish colony in, set up filter media, balanced out water. things are still stabilizing but the filtration has worked out very well. after reading a few threads on bucket filters i decided to modify my design a little; added about 30 foofoo body loofas and 10 thick brillo pads on top of the foofoos w/ my pump at the bottom of it all, trimmed my "weir" a few times till i got the right flow, added a "sock & rock ?filter?" to the feed from the pump (to catch any extra debris) and adjusted my gravity feed (from what was intended to be the sump). my new plan is to pick up water lettuce and add it to the "sump" tank. the bucket filter has worked beautifully, water initially greened/fogged up from the pond water going in with fish etc. cleared up in 3 days. 8-10 inch gold fish will be rehomed in the next few days, i have sourced out a source for large live local catfish from a fish restaurant owner in the korean district. almost there!!
