my piranha's attacking my pleco!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the only pleco that ever lived in my piranha tanks was the one that never came out of hiding. once it's out in the open it's a gonner. I think I've tried at least a dozen plecos, large or small and only one lived.
do you have crazy algae in your tank or something? why would you want to add a pleco that big? common pleco doesn't do that great of a job on cleaning algae anyway. a rubber lip pleco (Chaetostoma cf. thomsoni)does a much better job when it comes to algae control, and the best algae terminator I ever had in my tank is Otocinclus .

yea i got driftwood but its kinda hard for it to hide since it's so big. i think im gonna take the piranha out for a day and put it back with the pleco. if it still doesnt work, then im throwing it in my tropical tank.

I doubt that would work. If you want to do something like that, just take your net and scare your piranhas around for a couple of minutes and then put the plec back in.

Most plec/piranha success stories start when both are housed together when they're young. Are you just looking for something to help with left over food? Try snails or small fish like tetras, white cloud, guppies

or raphael catfish, it won't come out of hiding until couple hrs after it's pitch black.
I had two with my shoal and they were never harmed.

i just brought a 12 inch pleco that i was hoping to keep with my 7 inch piranha. i took the piranha out and then placed both of them into the 75g tank. after a few minutes, my piranha seems to chase my pleco kinda like how he does with feeders. it was also trying to bite the pleco. i took the pleco out right now but i want to put it back in the piranha tank again later. is there any way to make this work?? should i just leave the pleco in there to fend for itself?? :nilly::nilly::nilly::nilly:

I had 8 of my reds in a 120 with 2 large plecos, fed them freeze dried jumbo krill, they left them alone for a long time. When i changed there food than they went and killed my pleco, than week later ate the other. Best shot at keeping a pleco in there is to keep them well fed. Hungry fish aren't very friendly.

yep i have crazy amounts of ealgae.. i alrady tried rapheal before and half its body was missing the next day. im gonna try snails;they should work.

I would buy a scrapper n cut back on the light. N I definitely would not add a single snail to your tank.you'll have 1000 snails in 2 months n still have algy.I think you'll regret adding snails!

well.. i got good news and bad news. good news is i returned the pleco and brought neons tetras. bad news is most r now dead. that thread about Questionable Piranha Tank-mates..... IT'S PURE CRAP!! i have now come to the conclusion that the only tankmates suitable is more piranhas.

lmao, there's too many of us with tankmates in our tanks for it to be "pure crap" as you put it. I believe everyone of them had a disclaimer and were ranked in the order of "highest chance of success" but "not guranteed"

There's sooo many varibles involved in success and failure. Nice try though.

Well, I have oodles of convicts, 2 yo yo loaches (I killed one on accadent) and still the piranha ate my pleco when I tried adding one of those in. I shoved the pleco into a decoration after I fed everyone and they still were guarding it until its eventual death.

After I move here in a few weeks im going to try quanity vs quality since small common plecos are $1 right now. I'm hopeful between the move and quanity that one or two will survive. If not I'm only out a few bucks compared to the last one.

Still say feed them more, My Wolf nips at my large pleco but doesn't eat it. Some have kept an Oscar with there reds.
