My Progress from Last Nights New Tank Assembly

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It looks like it is coming along good.

Todays update includes a few pics with the tank just about full, pump running and lights (temporarily) on.

I opened-up my $16 bottle of fish poop, poored half of the contents into the tank to start the 'process.' Today, half of the balance of the bottle gets poored in, then in three days, the last 25%, per my LFS. Boy that stuff stinks!!

Anyhow, the water is cloudy and the cat has reserved a seat for future fish watching:)

Temp is currently at 78F without heater. LFS tells me I dont need a heater until later this year, in the fall. Is this really the case? I know it is warm in the summer where I live, but our family room temps range from 71 to 82F.

The lights consist of four 65w tubes. They are the smaller type of tube that does a 180 at the ends. I am not certain what they are actually called?? I am hoping this is enough for live plants and this tall of a tank. Advice??

Anyhow, here are a few more pics..

I don't like bala. They get big and they're skittish. Which means eventually they spaz out and smash into the glass and die. You seem to have a higher budget than I do so I recommend you look into Denison Barb(Puntius denisonii) as a substitute. They have them at the Shark Aquarium and they're gorgous.

For you because of what you seem to like I'd say start off with a couple of dwarf gourami. A pair of regular or blue dwarf and a pair of honey dwarf. Then add the angels.

German Blue Rams are difficult to keep, but in a planted tank with angels... wow.

what makes the german blue rams so hard to keep? i really like the coloration and size they get but im not that experienced of a keeper so i wont even try them yet.

Hiya Brown'sfan, you should start a new thread on this topic rather than hijack this one.

I agree that you should go ahead and get the heater to keep a level temp.
Looking good.

Saturday we bought some 'test' fish along with four real plants. We transplanted the plants and after some acclimation, let 6 tetras and 6 platy's go free. The first tenants of our new tank.

So far they are doing well, no floating fish yet.

The plants are already showing signs of photosynthesis; oxygen bubbles are being released from the plant leaves!

Water is starting to clear up, finally.

For some reason, photographing fish in an aquarium is a little difficult to catch them while still. Energetic little buggers..
