Just an idea for before you finish you build. You could buy a cheap large rubbermaid tub of about 300 or 500 gallons and put the cat and pacu in there so they have room to swim around. I am also building a large tank but I have a 700 gallon stock tank I am using to hold my fish right now so that they are not cramped in my 300.

I bought a kids swimming pool (640 gallons) to hold my guys over when I took down the tank they were in and put in one MUCH bigger. Cost me $70!
If my tank ever breaks or leaks, I can have that set up in my basement in less than an hour.

ya ive been thinking about the big tubs or kids swimming pool to house them until the big tank get built, how did you set up the filters on it? and do you think the pacu and the catfish might damage the kiddie pool?

That pool comes with a filter (or sorts) but I also ran on it an FX5 an XP3 and an Eheim Pro II.

The three canisters I had on it added up to a flow rate of less than 1100 gallons per hour...IE the turn over was less than 2x an hour. It was a LONG ways from ideal. But it held the fish over until their tank was ready.

I too also have a 1000 gallon above ground pool I got on sale for $18 from heb as back up. Its nice to have in an emergency. I forgot about the pool in my other post. lol

ok well i have some questions about putting my fish in one of those pools, first will the lining be safe for fish? second how long would you leave them in it max? and lastly should i just make a new thread in the diy for filter ideas?

absolutely fine. There is nothing that is dangerous about it. You can leave them in it until they outgrow it. Yes there are tons of ideas on diy filters for large tanks. The only kind of expensive part is for the pump. Everything else is cheap.
