My snakehead had become illegal!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is partly true, because you had the fish long before the ban, you may be safe from any penalty you would have normally received. Although, you would still have to "dispose" of your snakehead by law.

Actually you wouldn't have to dispose of it. The only reason you would have to dispose of it was if they tried to sell it since the posetion is illegal. This fish is grandfathered in an the op may have it until it dies. Just can't sell it. There is loophole in the us snakehead law that if you live in a state were they are not listed on the restricted species list and someone has them in the state from before the ban then aslong as you can prove it you can get them from that person. Just as long as it doesn't cross state lines then it becomes a federal case. Problem is those that have them still prefure not to talk about them due to having to prove it was acquired before the ban.

As to the op. If you have something like a thread on here "my new snakehead" or something to that effect. Maybe a receipt you would/should be covered. Both those should serve as your proof of ownership before the ban took effect. Just stop talking about it and only use this info if you have to.

It does not specify the species of snakehead. I know the gov sight for Manitoba?? or was it all of Canada says common name snakehead is banned but the fisheries are stupid and don't know anything but then put scientific name as the northern Snake head (i don't know the actual name I just know when I goggled it, it was northern) So maybe it's the same there.

That's terrible. The rest of the provinces will do the same eventually.
Thanks for the link.

Its a bit stupid to be honest, the rivers in Quebec are either too polluted, cloged by dams, or too cold. Why ban all snakeheads, do you really foresee and channa micropeltes surviving a frozen lake. My tank temp once dropped to 50° and my channa almost died. Luckily he's part x-man and i swapped in hot water to raise the tank temp (cause was because my brother refilled tank with hose after a 30% water change...in the winter).

Hello MFK,

Last year i bought a giant snakehead. Today he is alive and well measuring in at 16". But recently in 2012 the Quebec government passed a law that not only are snakeheads illegal to sell for retailers, but possession is a crime too!!! I dont know what to do!? Anybody have experience or legal knowledge in this aspect? I love my Galactus and wil not resort to "destroying" him.

Dude, you need to learn a thing or two about fish. That's clearly a bowfin. ;)

Seriously though, just keep quiet about it. Its not like they have mandatory, monthly fish inspections.

I have the perfect idea. Im gona rename my fish to "Jean-Guy Latendresse". The government wont touch a pro Quebec fish!!
