My two Geophagus have paired up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my was 91 too! blue and white chromed out!

Never heard of geos cross breeding. Most of the time they won't even pay other members of their genus any mind. I doubt they will ever get to the fry stage, but I can't say it's impossible.

One thing is confirmed she was pregnant as she just laid eggs in front of me a few moments ago. There are eggs everywhere. She's trying to fit everything in here mouth but is having a difficult time catching every single egg. The male is continuing to chase any unwanted visitors swimming by the area. The male is also taking some eggs in the mouth, Is he eating them or helping the female gather them up???

Wow.. I've never witnessed such a thing. These two have definitely paired up.

I quickly grabbed my video camera so I'll post soon as I can get it imported to my PC...

There may be behavioral differences - G. altifrons are immediate mouth brooders. The female would lay a few eggs, the male fertilizes them, and the female picks them up before laying a few more eggs.

Did it look like the male did his thing?

As the female laid the eggs the male was behind shivering as he was releasing something. However my Panda Uaru kept looking for an opportunity to jump in and grab some loose eggs. But as you described, after he swam after the female and shivered the female scooped the eggs into her mouth. But she couldn't collect them all. Eggs are currently in her mouth.

Well the female altifron scooped up all the eggs and was incubating them in her mouth for a few days then they just all disappeared... :(..

However, now my female Redhead laid eggs....lol... below is the male guarding the eggs.

I'd assume they were laid sometime last night-mid morning... Should I pull the eggs out or leave them until they hatch? that's if they do... The male won't let anyone come near the eggs..
