My Umbee Growth journal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
OK guys, update time.

Completely emptied out the tank, resealed the corners and painted the back. As you can see from the picture below. My back was tinted black which still allowed light to escape through the back and made pictures harder then nessicary. So I painted it black.IMG_20170209_210559845.jpg IMG_20170209_211545730.jpg

While I siliconed the seam in question I did my best to get some silicone in between the panels after sitting a few days the white line in the seam is significantly better. Although not perfect, it's probably as good as it's getting without completely separating the panels. (Which I'm not willing to try.)

Decided to give tile a shot, since I've been seeing alot more tile tanks and the gf likes the look of them. I've always been a thick substrate guy so this is new to me. If I end up not liking it I will just cover it with sand so I figured no harm no foul.I let ALL the silicone cure for 78 hours then filled her up.

After letting her run empty for a couple days. I tested the water and added my bio balls into my sump. ( This is a bag/ submerged media sump) The next day I did a large water change and threw in a couple goldfish from a friend of mines feeder stock. (Yes yes, feeders equal parasites. But he raises his own in a enclosed system and feeds his peacocks them with no problems so I didn't mind using them. ) I left them in a few days while testing the water and all systems pointed good. No leaks, no dead goldfish, no high levels. So I went ahead and aquascaping alittle and added my sponge filter into the sump and added my guys into tank. So far so good.

So hopefully this works! I'll keep a careful eye on it, everyone seems happy. Although the tank is significantly more open then it was before. Hopefully when these guys get abit bigger it won't look so empty XD but that's soon enough I'll be having to move them to a bigger tank.

I'm thinking about getting a better light and trying to grow some thick green algae on those slates. Just to throw in some green. I'm already missing my greens lol

Little update on my male, showing great colors. Still no pairing, but then again not even positive I have any females lol anyways short and sweet.

Man, seems like there are so many umbee posts these days lol

Looking fantastic man! Keep up the good work, amazing job with the tank, really did it correctly which is great to see. I'm very excited for these guys to put some size on, keep us updated!

Size? Lost all but one of mine to disease from a transplanted Rio mag. The lone survivor is in my new backyard pond for the summer. Not sure of sex. About 8-9 inches but not showing color

My "male" is doing great, although I'm really not sure he is male at all. It really could go either way, while I was away on a fishing trip he managed to get through my egg crate divider and kill off the two smaller "female" umbee's I had in there with him.

Since then the tank has kind of become my "temp tank" if you will. The pecking order took a bad turn in my 180 when my old Severum died a bit ago. And my Jag started fighting with my Oscars so I removed him and for now he is in my 120 with this male Umbee. They get along great. Which is really strange to me. I really thought I'd have to put the divider back up.

I'm actually just waiting to see what this hurricane does. Then next week the Umbee will go into my 8x32x32 at my work office. And the Jag will probably get rehomed or, put into the same tank as the Umbee. I'm not actually sure yet to be honest.

As for this tank, I'm going to rescape it. Double check all the seals.( Just to make sure nothing has gone wrong since I redid them. ) Re-pipe it for less noise, and then I'll figure out a permanent resident for it, since I'm completely out of big tanks for any growouts.

Beani are great! however they can be challenging to grow out. I saw you inquiring about the haitiensis, those are awesome fish to keep as well. I think that either way you would be happy. I would recommend getting some fry from gunnar and furyosa, Justin hollansd's rio mag umbee pair. Justin Holland Justin Holland

Yeah Justin's pair is awesome. However my next project is just going to be fish that can stay in this 120 for life. So I need something that Max's out around 12 or so. In my opinion, I've looked at haitiensis and a few others. Right now I'm thinking about getting some San Pedro Beani fry and trying to grow them out. I've read their Abit tougher but I'm willing to put in work. I'll have to post pictures of my new divider I made, it's plexiglass and fits the tank alot better. No more accidental falls or tipping over.
