My Wolf's new home!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So i now have broadband and i promised an update...

...unfortunately i wanted to do a complete story but I can't get all the pics off my camera phone but I'm gonig to update nonetheless.

So i moved into my new place not long after the initial photos were taken and on inspection found a few problems. With the tank installed, I began moving in to discover a fairly large probelm in the bathroom. Long story short, the entire bathroom needed to be stripped meaning i had to lvie in a hotel for a couple of days. Eventually, this was fixed and i was able to settle in.

When it came to transferring the fish into the tank, I was also presented with a challenge, what with a couple of the poly boxes breaking in transit so my poor merc got a bit damp. THEN, upon arrival, i began the careful process of placing the fish into the tank only for my little gold wolf to make a break for freedom. He ended up shuffling his way across the carpet and i discovered there and then that Gold wolves are slippery little buggers.

Anyway, the fish were installed, my filtration was transferred and everything seems to be going well (as of Friday last week). Last weekend, i decided i would make my first new purchase and having promised myself I would get some Cichla Monoculus, i bought three babies from my LFS and introduced them to the baby tank. That evening, and with the Cichla settled and feeding, i fed the main tank and prepared to go to bed. One hour later, all hell broke loose.

To take a step back, the first week that i introduced the fish, my two Gold wolves had a bit of a tiff. The smaller one came off worst and his tail was shredded quicte badly. Everything calmed down and they seemed to be getting on fine.

Back to the evening of chaos, I switched the light back on to find my Curuipra had grabbed my little (10") Gold wolf. With the light on, the black immediately let him go but the poor fella wasn't looking to happy so I transferred him to the Baby tank. I've done this before and never had a problem, even with the occupants of the baby tank including Columbian Tetras, baby Hecklii and dwarf Crenicichla so i thought nothing of it with the baby Cichla.

They lasted two days. Bugger. So I've re ordered some more Cichla and am waiting for them to get a little bigger. At the same time, I should be able to finally take my new Cichlasoma cf. Ornatus that i ordered from Jeff Rapps and put them in my baby tank to grow out.

So, that's pretty much everything until today so without further ado, here’s some pics;

I'm gonig to find a way to put a suitable background up but for the moment, It's gonig to be open to ut outside world, what with being in front of the livingroom window!

I'm Daan Saaf in Hampshire.

My Brasiliensis is a real character and between him and my big Gold wolf, they are very interactive. The only shame is that the Brasiliensis pair i have seem to have split- they spawned a few times but they rarely occupy the same area of the tank now which is a shame.

so tiny update; Two new gold wolves expected Thursday morning taking my group to 4, though the new ones will be far too small for the main tank initially.

Next conundrum is sorting out some lighting but I'm not sure if i want to have a pendant made and use some T5's or buy an off the shelf Arcadia or similar...

Thoughts?

Cool, you moved down south then. You will need at T5 to light it properly. I have the bulb resting on top of the clear cover with black cutting over the top. It's in my garage so doesn't need to look great. You may want something a little nicer in your place.

Are the golds from WW's?

yeah from WW though they called after taking my money to tell me one of them had sold... urgh. Not sure what to do now but i'vve got one for sure.

I've always been down south as it's splendid. And work is here. Which is handy.

Will need to sort lighting properly- i've got a duo of T8's on top but it looks crap. I was gonig to see if i can get a SS canopy made and suspend a pair of T8's beneath it. Otherwise, a x4 Arcadia is possibly the other option, though they are expensive... really expensive.

Nice tank, you say 320gallons, what are the dimensions? Who made the tank, ND? If i were you, i'd get a twin arcadia 150watt halide, you should be able to pick one up from AC for £150-200. The shimmer is amazing.

wow, very nice sir. Lovely looking fish, you're an inspiration to us all!!

Anyone who is inspired by me should be careful...

... the police have records for 'those people'.

I'm looking at the Arcadia solution but i am really not totally impressed by the price off them. The minimum system i can see looks to cost over £300. Being a firm believer of the concept 'if it isn't broken, don't fix it' i find it hard to spend that kind of money of some fancy bulbs..! But then at the same time, I agree I'm probably not getting the most out of my tank with the current lighting. What i need is a happy medium...

In other news, my new gold wolf's arrival has been delayed due to it's apparent suicide attempt last night at WW leaving it a bit battered. It's still alive, and if i know Gold wolves, it will be absolutely fine but they wanted to delay delivery a little to make sure the little chap has calmed and is sfe to ship. I've allso requested two more as soon as they can find them. My goal is a shoal of about 5/6. I've also kind of fallen for a stunning 12" flag tail that's for sale at the moment, though i know my Black Wolf is partial to silvery fish so that might not be a good idea. I'm also toying with breaking my SA rule and getting either a VATF, BATF or GATF. They're all available, all the same size an all the same price so it's up to me if i want one.

Oh and 320 is approximate and is USG- UKG is obviously less but given the audience, i think USG is more appropriate and big numbers are always better. That's what i tell myself anyway. Dimensions are 84"x26"x36" (LHW), made by Poseidons Palace, whom i highly recommend if you're in the UK.
