My wolves

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well he lays on the bottom for short periods of time and then he'll swim along it, I've seen him lay in front of the curu without any problem so I don't think it's that, and then swimming up he swims close to the odoe most of the time so I don't think he's scared. And the power head is at the bottom under a hide where the black wolf will sometimes lay and even then the ery will swim in it, so I do t think he's scared. But I will keep watch of course to make sure. Thanks for the heads up. And if I add a Bichir it will only be the delhezi since. I have enough I think, for my tank size anyway. And the power head is small it's a rio 200-300 I believe so it's not strong. And the filter is a cascade 1500. So you think I'll be fine with just wolves and bichirs? Other fish in the tank are a large Raphael catfish, odoe, large bala shark, and a small jaguar cichlids. Reduce the bio load some too. Opinions? And thank you I have the ornate, lap, and Senegal. I like pbb, but they get to big I think though they'll take long to get there. I just don't want to much bio load. And will do thank you. I think I'm going to do another water change, they seem to be gasping for air for some reason the bubbler as always enough so I can't be that there's a lack of oxygen.

That jaguar cichlid can be an issue once bigger and territories become divided or up for grabs. How big is the tank? Sorry I didn't recall seeing that if you mentioned that already. I think the bio load should be watched. If your water params are good then wouldn't worry too much about the fish as long as the tank can support them. WC sounds like a good idea. for sure.

Only a 120g 4x2x2. I was toying with the idea of moving my room around and doing a 180, but idk if my room, being on the second floor, can handle the weight. I'd also have to save up a bit. And jags are the only cichlid I still like and I've always had one in a set up like malas. I've never had much of an issue. This one hasn't showed much signs of aggression towards the wolves, but he does push the bichirs with his mouth when they're in front of his face, but they just move and he goes about his business, doesn't bite down when he does it. But if he does become a problem he will have to go, wolves are my favorite fish. And I did the water change, the problem was the temp. I guess from them bumping it sometimes it messed up, I haven't had it plugged in for awhile. So after I did the water change the other day I figured I'd plug it in. I didnt see the light to indicate it was on, I touched the water when I opened the lid and it was really hot, so I quickly removed about 20 gallons and filled it back with as cold of water would come out the shower. And everyone has since gone back to normal, breathing slowed down and they're relaxed, I'm gonna keep an eye on them though in case there is something else wrong. But they were fine before the water change the other day, replacing the water should only help I would think? Could it throw params off? The ery is still acting funny though, staying at the top and taking a bunch of breaths of air, hopefully he makes it. He swimming again though where before he was in one spot doing that. The odoe and jaguar left the top and are back to patrolling the bottom and middle to top where as before they stood at the top. Mala and curupira breathing has slowed greatly and the lap and ornate haven't went up for air since that I witnessed. And the Senegal is always swimming so I never noticed anything if I were to just observe him. I do weekly wc of 30-50%

Water changes shouldn't do any damage. Sometimes it's not enough and that's why in those cases when fish look funny it's better to have some numbers. Especially when u have a lot of fish that make lots of waste and the wc's don't seem to be effective. I think ur stock is a bit thick but like 2-3 wc per week and monitoring the temp can fix a lot.

Interesting read, and your tank looks awesome. I had no clue you could keep wolves in a 120. I have a 120 in my bedroom too but its not stocked as cool as yours.

Just a heads up, senegals and ornates grow a lot quicker than delhezi. I grew out a mixed bunch of bichir a few years ago and I found the delhezi was the slowest and also shyer. senegals grew the fastest and were always fat and easy to feed. Ornates are all over the place. I had one that was growing extremely slowly and another that was growing 3x as fast.

It's a shame you don't live in western Canada I was going to suggest a snakehead as a tankmate, my old giant never fought anyone.

Ok thank you, tomorrow I'm going to clean out the filter just in case as well if weather permits. Lights are out and I'd rather leave them in peice and hopefully the ery will get better. And maybe I'll bring some fish to the lfs, I just don't want to throw anything off, though I don't witness much aggression other then a display here and there amongst the smaller fish. Namely mala to odoe or what the jag does to the bichirs.

Thank you for the kind words, and yea only thing with curupira is its said to not be as active, but mines is honestly out swimming almost everytime I look at my tank. He rarely hides unless like I've said before I make a fast approach. And malas and erys it's good for. And as for growth rates, I've had my ornate from the beginning of this thread as you see, and you see the Senegal was about 4-5 inches then. Before I made a thread, he was even smaller and the ornate was maybe an inch smaller. The Senegal has caught up to the lap and ornate. They are only 8 inches with the Senegal being 7. I see them eat just not as much as him. I've had slow growth from them two. And only reason I haven't gotten a delhezi is because I haven't found one with decent patterns, they've been bland with only like 3 or 2 stripes that weren't even big. My ornate hides I haven't see. Him for about a week or so until yesterday. While my lap is always in sight. I don't necessarily look for him either though, I'll take quick peeks and if I can't see then he's doing a good job lol. And yea, snakeheads couldn't make it through our winters idk why we can't keep them but whatever maybe one day. I'll post pics I took a while back of the bichirs

nice community! hoplias sp? in the last photo? How do your wolves react to the polys. my curu somtimes nibbles on them to push them away. but recently seems to try to act like a poly. hahaha LOL. Out of the 2 wovles mediums hoping to put 1 or both in the 240g!

I say put both, better to spread aggression between the wolves if there's any. I really want a gold, seems they stay at the top. But idk, my tank is pretty stocked with fish the will grow large if I get one I want to keep the odoe. If I do this I will get rid of the jag and Raphael to reduce bio load. Rememberwolves will be more aggressive towards conspecifics than say to a cichlid that's why I say add them both. But sadly no just a common mala, same as the other pics I've just posted, it's the larger of the two from the beginning of the thread. I love his pattern and fat self though lol only problem I've seen with him is he does as the jag and your curu, moves the bichirs out the way. Only other issue I've had was him and the odoe a few times got into it, no marks were left, it was funny cause he 4 inches smaller and not as girthy. The odoe was the initiater, this was when he became the largest and also attacked the curu. But my curu lays with the polys, if there's any fish he truly finds as a non threat it's them he literally lets them walk all over him so to speak. But only them and maybe the ery, so far atleast he has t done nothing to the ery, anyone else stays close to his face and he puffs his gills out at them. And I subbed you on YouTube so post a vid when you do the comm during or right after release would be awesome. If I had a 240 I'd definitely have more smaller species of wolves. Though I kinda want to do that now, but don't want more aggression or to much of a bio load. Will have to get another filter. I was so tempted with Wes having larger ones, but I'd rather have a smaller one like the 6 inchers. When I went to see if he still had any he posted the new stock list sadly. Hopefully he'll get another shipment in, maybe I'll text him about it. I know if I were to get a 9 inch one the curu will take it as a threat and attack at first. If it's small like the 6 inch he won't bother it cause he won't take it as a threat, much like he does with all the others, which is what I want.

Yeah I might end up doing so. Once the gold and "traihara" get around to 9-10" mark. they will be going in the 240g. I dont worry about the wolves fighting.its more of the existing stock that i have. dovii is #1 concern then the cichla. The first ever wolf i put in there. only lasted a week. Found him chewed up from the dovii. Then I added the curu which went smoothly(month/year later). He wasnt soo timid or lets say a wimp LOL. The gold is very active and nothing like a hoplias or ery. Acts like a bass and hoards everything hahaha. Ill make a vid just of the gold and the other wolf. I also have red and kesselleri. which plan to add(60g Growout). tried red with the gold. gold acted like piranha started to bite the crap out of him. wes still has goldies up for grabs. get one!
