well just like the title tells you my water is green I know its algea but no matter what i do the water just gets worse, ive done

30g WC every week, iv done this WC for a month.

10g every 3 to 4 days, i did this WC for about 2 months.

and even 40g a week, and iv only done a 40g 2 times.

but nothing seems 2 work im thinking at this point it would be easyier to start over, the tank has been running for about 5 to 6 years so im wondering if its crashed. Lighting varies between days and weeks depending on if im home or not i do somtime forget to turn the lights out but the lighting has never caused a problem like this, im just looking for a little knowledge and maybe even some ideas as 2 what im doing wrong, if there any questions on my setup please feel free 2 ask cuz i dont ant 2 give my cichlids away and there babies

1-keep the lights off...for good till your water is clear! any light at all will help it grow, so just don't turn them on.

2- Do complete water chages. take your fish out and put them in some sort of other tank or container and do a 100% water change...youdon't tell how big your tank or tanks are, but it sounds like you are only doing only part of your tank.

3. feed your fish less and do more regular water changes when you do your overhaul, thank will help prevent future algae blooms.

algae needs 2 things, light and nutrients...so the less you have of both, the less algae you will have, and the more plants you have the better too, cuz they soak up the nutrients and light faster.

Get a UV light or you can try AlgaeFix.

I know where your coming from. I have a 200 gallon goldfish/koi tank that had algae problems. Got 2 UV lights and used AlgaeFix for a couple weeks and that worked.

Hope that helps. Good luck !!! :headbang2

im not 2 big on using chemicals only chemical iv ever used is PRIME and thats makes sense, lol but as far as plants, what kind of plants i do have some bamboo do you think that would work i use the green algea water as the main water and the light from my room and the grow fast , so my question is do you think they would be ok in my tank

using chemicals that kills algae also kills fish=no good:(

A 100% wc is even dumber....that will kill off all your bb.

Keep the tank lights off 24/7, until fixed. Do 30-50% wc's every other day until its clear again:)

I agree, using chemicals is more stressful to the fish than not using chemicals. If however, your in a bad situation with your algae, it might not hurt to try. I used AlgaeFix (Made by AP) and it worked great, with no visible side effects. I would only use it until you have it under control. You should probably also get a UV lightto prevent the algae problems.

Again, if it's not as bad you claim it to be, then try the more natural remedy (I would recommend the natural remedy over the chemical if it works).

You've been presented with your remedies. Good luck! :headbang2

why exactly is a 100% water change so bad? bacteria is in the filter not the water it self...i see no problem with it...he changes the water so ofter, why not change it all, it causes no problem especially if he has a place to store the fish for about a day or 2...or even less time.

my 55 was getting a real algae problem to a couple of weeks ago. i decided to use the algaefix and it worked great. i used the algaefix as directed and when i saw the dead algae foaming at the surface i did a 25%water change and skimmed off all the dead algae. also i watched the media in my filter and changed that throught the process. took about 4 days but my water is clear now. my tank gets some natural light also but im gonna just keep monitoring it because its the only place my tank can go right now. but pretty much been clear ever since.
