nice! id definately not trust the frt with the xanny...i just don't trust turtles & they've been known to take big chunks out of gars

fish is looking great michael; i will be in touch about photos in the near future as i am planning some major updates to the sites. don't worry too much about xander's comment about getting a new camera (i don't think i could after picking up a G-gar :P), but there are plenty of ways to take photos of fishes even with 2.5 MP cameras (i did so back in the day, and now they have phones with 2x that good of cameras). i also know you're mainly putting up immediate pics to please the masses (aka all us gar-aholics).

as for the FRT...especially after seeing the size on that thing compared to the gars...i would just be careful and quite wary (as i'm sure you will be).

great fish, and look forward to future updates. one thing about golds phasing back to normal...this usually occurs in golds with a "sunburst" pattern, aka those that have some black splotching in them...it seems to be much less likely in straight up gold fish, and fluctuations may occur as the fish matures and enters spawning mode, but this has been known to just change back to straight gold after a period of time (i'll dig up some pics too; the owner of AP at one point had two golds in the same freaking tank).

congrats again--

michael, if i were (as lucky as) you, here're some extra precautions i'd take with the xanthic gar in the tank. although im sure you are already keeping more eyes than humanely possible on that tank:D

1)remove the frt
2)remove the black aro (if it's been fine then i'd just leave it in, but refer to #3 for extra precautions
3)add a thick sponge layer to the walls of the tank. it would help the fish feel more secure and greatly reduce wear n tear on the fish's nose (especially if you're unreasonably anal about your gars appearences). not to mention a well designed/very thick padding layer can be the difference between a harmless ram into the tank walls & a gar with a broken back. at the very least, i would add some cover to the sides of the tank for extra security.
4)plants, again, for added security. especially since the gar still looks ~12"

the padding layer might seem a little extreme, but imo it actually makes a tank look better (you could have moss grow on the sponge too) & is something i'm actually going to do with my planned upgrade (1" padding on the glass itself, then styrofoam background).

again, incredible looking fish, good luck with it! hope it grows well for you.

either that or you need to fly to NY & snap some pics!

i might have missed this, but i too would like to thank michael for granting us immediate pics.

i want to see them in the 500 gallon. i expect pics in about 2-3 weeks... lol

Stunning!Add a black background and it will stand out even more!Looking good!

i agree...this pretty much needs to be done. of course, michael should do what he wants with the tank, but i have found this to bring out the best colors in gars (and many other fishes) and will also aid in getting good photos...i use a black background on all my tanks and have done so for many years now--
