My zoo update

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Test fills went PERFECT. Somehow there was a communication error between the zoo and the painters...so they will show up tomorrow (a day late). This weekend, I hope to do a series of fill/dump to rid it of toxins etc....then fill for good.

Today, I'm moving around all of the fish in holding to make room for construction of a new 15x6x3 foot holding pool. This is something I've been begging for several months now. The arapaima have far outgrown that 750 holding. Sadly, the choice was made to spend the money only after loosing a fish. :screwy: I'm both sad and very mad, but at least it's getting done right now.

You want me to write a strongly worded letter to someone to get things happening? lol..

When do you expect to have the pima's in their final home?

will there be reptiles in d enclosure?:naughty:

Thanks, but I have already. It did work somewhat, but not to the point I was hoping for.

I'd guess two months from now.
Only one will go on display.....and even with just one, it will still hae to move to a larger facility later. Our display is only large enough to show it for a couple of years.

There will be herps! (FINALLY!!!!) I've got a pair of green anaconda, two species of river turtles and lots of dart frogs.

only cost is letting me come and see them every once in awhile

That wouldn't be too hard seeing as how we are a free zoo. :D

They got the primer sprayed in yesterday. Today is the actual color layer. This weekend will be the fill/dump to get it all settled in. Then start cycling late next week.

On tap today is the big Koi move. All of our koi come inside for the winter (their outdoor pool is drained). I've got to move a few hundred koi in the next 4 hours!

Website update.

" The exhibit looks finished…is it open?

When viewing the exhibit from the lobby of the Visitor Center, you may wonder what is left to do before Tropical Encounters can open to the public. The answer? While the exhibit construction is complete and all of the plants have been installed, there is still much behind the scenes work to do before we can open the exhibit for your first visit.

During April and May, we will continue to give the plants time to establish themselves in their new tropical home. In March, we began to introduce some of the fish species into the exhibit. Beginning in May and extending throughout the summer, zoo keepers will also start introducing animals and birds into Tropical Encounters. This is a slow process to make sure that each new animal or bird group safely acclimates before a new animal or group of birds is introduced. During this critical period, zoo keepers and gardeners will monitor the Tropical Encounters environment closely to make sure both the animals and plants are doing well and that environmental controls are operating as needed.

If all goes as carefully planned, Tropical Encounters may be open during the summer on an occasional basis. We expect to permanently open Tropical Encounters this fall."

Kind of a wussy move on the Zoo's part to skim over the mistakes rather than own them and acknowledge the fact that there was a problem.

First time posting here and I find that this is going up in my own backyard, really cool! I would love to get a behind the scenes tour!
