Native algae eater???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I never said "stay smaller" I said "relatively small". Central stonerollers do not get up to 10", ever. They have an absolute max of about 8.5" but rarely get over 6". Also you'll notice if you actually read the OP's posts he says he is upgrading from the 20 gallon. Quit acting like you know more than everyone.

Central stonerollers do get up to 10". How I know? I sampled them during my internship with the Fisheries. They do get bigger than 6" and it's not uncommon. Perhaps I wouldn't be a prick if someone is so misinformed and suggest a wrong species for a wrong setting. Just because the OP is upgrading from the 20gal, doesn't mean he is getting rid of 20gal or planning to add more fish in the bigger tank for the crappie and the warmouth.

But for a 20gal tank? Probably not.

No, I definitely agree not good for a 20g. but of course you shouldn't have a Warmouth (who get up to 12inches) or a Crappie (who average 18inches around here) in a 20 either ;), hopefully the op is upgrading like he said.....I think Stonerollers may get different sizes depending on where you find them....I believe your correct they probably do get larger than 8 inches....but Ive never seen one over 6inches in the creeks around here, and on several state sites they are listed with max length of 8.5 inches.

Well central stonerollers do get larger around here and I've seen them being sold as heavy pike suckers at bait stores. Perhaps the size of creeks, the diet or the predators may affect on their potential size? But then again, many sources has stated that common shiners' max length of 7 inches long while the pumpkinseed's max length of 16 inches long as both you and me know that it's not true.

Lol, agreed.....but I sure would like to see a 16 inch Pumpkinseed, yeah that would be awesome

Well, this got heated pretty quickly. Maybe we can all agree that the best solution (in a small tank with fish that will quickly outgrow it) is solving the CAUSE of the algae - not adding more fish.

Well The reason I have the black crappie and the warmouth in the 20 gallon is so they can grow enough to be in my 55 gallon with my longear and my bluegills. I

I will keep the fish that eats the algae in there to keep the algae in check. I already have a filter and can change it more often if i need to with the fish. Once I get the warmouth and the crappie out, I will try to put a school of minnows in there. Also the post above was posted by itself when I was in the middle of typing.

I'd say that you are overstocked if you are adding the crappie and warmouth to the 55gal tank. I thought I gave you some advice few months ago.....

The real question is that what is causing algae in your tank? Is the tank in a sunlighted room? What color of the algae?
