Native algae eater???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so 4 sunfish are overstocking a 55 gallon??? and they are all 4-5 inches. Also Im trying to eventually get a 100+ gallon tank and I will move all of my fish into there.

The algae is green. some of it is hair algae, but it doesn't get to grow too large... And yes It is a sunlight room. Its the only place I can think of that is on thee 1st floor of my house. most rooms on the 1st floor have big windows...

Yes it's overstocked and there will be some aggression issues soon, especially from the warmouth. Just because they are 4-5 inches, doesn't mean they won't grow more.

I think its great that your gonna upgrade and I love the fact you have Longear and Warmouth( two of my favorite fish) but for a 55g It really depends on the size and type of the Sunfish, 4-5 Orangespotted sunnies, would be fine in a 55g; if your sunnies are Central Longear in an inch or two your gonna have problems regardless of the sub species, unless you upgrade and of course Bluegill can get over 12 inches. Have you tested your water parameters, and whats your filtration and how much do you feed your fish? Also crappie are beautifull fish but 100g is on the minimum side tp properly house them, what dimensions are the tank your looking for? I am not trying to flame, just help, I think its great that yourve got some beautifull natives and that your looking to upgrade.

I think you forget the one thing that can causing problems.....their natural aggression.

I agree Lepomis can get pretty aggressive around breeding time or in too small of an area without dithers and structure, but I think a reasonable amount of O-spots and bantams would do fine in a 55g, and Longears in a 100g.

I Keep reading that i need a 100 gallon on here, but every book I read says I need a 55 gallon. I have every native fish book I can Find on the internet. I'm trying to convince my mother to allow me to get a 100+ gallon aquarium. By the way I live with my mom since I AM 15 YEARS OLD OK. Also with the "filtration problem" I have 2 filters on my 55 gallon that are meant for 75-100 gallons each. And my 20 gallon has a filter for a 40+ gallon. so its not the nutrience its just the light. I also change my water and filters each weekend. All I need is a bigger aquarium.

I'll give you a bit of a comparison to what I am running. I have a 72 Gallon tank (not much bigger then yours) I have it stocked with 1 Rock Bass 1 Black Crappie and 3 Pumpkinseed sunfish, all 5 of them not much bigger then the fish you have stocked in your tank. I have slight aggression issues (which is to be expected) and also my tank has a high biomass. I have 2 Emperor 400's and 2 Fluvial Canister filters. I still cant keep up with the bioload and I must do 2 water changes a week. You forsure need a bigger tank.

Agreed. They are some nasty little buggers. My green perch who is fatter and has a mouth 2x their size is scared to death of them. I have a 7" sunfish that was supposed to be food for my bass... He survived being in his mouth and has somehow survived for 2 years. Beautiful. And NOT scared.
