Females have been shown to develop odontodes, although I dont know how large, so its not a clear cut decision.

When exported I think its common for them to be cut off so they dont puncture the bags they are in. But after they are in the country they should start growing back. Check my avatar for the odontodes on my L190.

oh yeah i saw the whiskery things on him...does this mean he is a she?! ugh i like having boys in my tanks only lol

Neervana, oh you lucky little thing! Beautiful Plec and Royals are my favorite of all.

thanks :) yeah, he is busy trying to scrape off all the algae that has been growing on my bogwood! he is very active. i'll put some pics up later on during the week when he's a bit more settled.

Its a possibility, I havent seen any concrete descriptions of the difference between the sexes. Ive always called it a him anyway, he's too aggressive to be a girl, he will attack the vegetables that I feed. I havent seen that with any of my 11 other Panaque.

when yours swims around will he move one of his *fins*? like there is one fin that he is always moving...why is that?

sorry i mean even when he's just latched onto the glass and resting - it looks like he's trying to fan himself..?! i wonder why he is doing this.

sorry read the post after that. i meant when he is still. there's a part of his fin that is moving like a fan...i dunno how to explain it. maybe i should take a vid later.

I think its to steady themselves and I also wonder if this might help them to breath by keeping a constant flow of water. My guy does this a lot. When he's on the glass, he definitely does it a lot. I don't think that mouth, as giant as it is, can't hold his whole body without a lot of work. Only when he totally relaxes on the bottom does he stop the fin waving. And yes, I think its an L330 as well. I found that a good mix of krill, pellet, and veggies will get those odontals growing, but they don't grow super fast. It will take some time.

yeah!!! thats what i was saying!!! but i was getting worried in case he wasnt taking well to my tank conditions or something :D cos i acclimatised him sooo slowly!!! but i think my one has already reached his potential size? i dunno..he is already big..i think he must be 10" or 9" at least because i he doesnt fit in both my hands. how big do these guys get? right now he is in a 150 gallon and he seems to be enjoying the space. i can see scratch marks everywhere all over my bogwood where he's been grazing
