Need help all the discus are going south!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Seems like I do the same for our discus
We had the group of 8 then got rid of 3 but i already got them back in hopes they would get happier, kind of funny that the 3 we sent to another tank are acting the same as the 5 we kept but those 3 were gone 2 days before the rays were introduced, this is why im thinking its possibly from slitting them up ans not from anything brought in by the rays.
I do agree with you guys tho, the cloudy eye and fungus look bad. Will melafix help this?

Have you ever heard of Artemiss? Its all natural and fairly inexpensive. I've heard mixed reviews of melafix, the manager of my lfs hates it.

My opinion - I would remove the discus, to a smaller QT tank, maybe a 55. Lots of water changes, w/ aged water, post the pics on Simply Discus to hear from experts about possible medication. When the discus are once again healthy - introduce your least favorite discus into the ray tank. Watch him for a couple days & monitor his health. If he appears ok, put all the discus back in.

Its a good idea but wont removing the discus to another smaller tank just create mire stress on them?? They have been in the 125 for almost a year?

I would QT them ASAP and raise the temp to 88-90 and Add salt and keep up on the water changes! I would hold out on the Prazi and any other treatments till you know exactly what is going on... no need to add any more stress with meds.
With the addition of the rays i am pretty sure the increased bioload isnt helping any.

You've totally changed the dynamic of the tank by taking 4 out and adding the rays, they simply look stressed. When any fish is stressed their immune system goes to hell ad they are susceptible to things like fungus and disease. Time may let things get back to normal, although the tank looks very open, and discus like cover such as plants, or logs.

Dithers such as a school of tetras might bring them out of the shock they seem to be in, but there then is also the chance of bringing in disease.

if youre gonna try and give advice. posting pictures of stunt discus and low quality ones usually doesnt help your case.

I heard salt is not good for discus? So far I have done 40% water changes every day. Just move the rays out into another tank, I set the heaters up a few degrees as well. The rays seem to be fine even tho I just moved them to the 40. Hopefully the discus just somewhat go back to normal...
Its very strange, the discus will act fine for about an hour and get my hopes up then go right back to the top corner?

step the water change up to 75%+ everyday. more cleaner water the better. seems like they realize the ray are gone but are still worry.

Will do, so are we thinking with the rays out of the picture should things possibly return to normal? Or should I find some sort of mild medication to help with the cloud eye and such?

no medication works better than clean water. give it a week and see then you may medicate if you choose

The discus have cloudy eyes and slime coat problems. Even if the rays seem fine they are immune to whatever parasites they are harbouring and the discus are not.

I suggest adding salt (aquarium or pool salt is fine) at 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons and Kanaplex by Seachem according to directions asap. You've got some bacterial issue going on along with external parasitic irritant causing the slime coat reaction.
