NEED HELP GROWING CORALINE ALGAE!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so ichecked everything... all reads normal. dosed with purple up and im getting green algae... idk... i never had this problem in any of my saltwater reefs >:[

What do you think is in purple up that would cause green algae?

To my knowledge there are no phosphates or nitrates in that solution...

I think that you have phosphates in your tank...which is giving you green algae, and is prevented your coraline from growing. Based on your last posts that is the best conclusion I can come up with.

Via a reactor...or anywhere you can get some high flow over some phosphate removing media.

Lots of people like chemi pure elite as a good overall media...however I never had luck with it getting cyano so I am assuming it didnt work the best with the phosphates.

Seachem makes a phos product that also removes silicates...I think it is called phosban...unlike most it doesnt have to be removed once reaching capacity, it wont leach phosphates back into your tank either.

I will be running this stuff soon, and switching it out once a month in my tank.

Your not gonna get an overnight algae bloom from any single source especially not liquified Baking Soda aka Purple Up. It takes a variety of sources - at it's simplest - h20, light, protiens. Phosphates are naturally occuring as well - they are an organic decomp byproduct. I'd start with - lighting no more than 8 hrs a day and no direct sunlight from windows. Next Protiens - gravel vac, discard old carbon and polishing pads, feed no more than fish can eat in 3 min.. H20 - regular weekly water changes of 10-20%.

Alot ppl have grave misconceptions about algae - it doesn't come from tapwater like I've read oh so frequently and thank god - all of my 100+ to -200+ Freshwater tanks would be septic @ 50% weekly w/c's if that was the case.

purple up does next to nothing. ph, alk, and mag are the 3 biggest factors ive found in my tanks. ive gotten up coraline algae quarter size about ever week on my glass when i kept all my levels alil on the high side. seachem products are the best i have found for it.

+1 like I, and otherone have said...however you do need to keep the phosphates down for the coraline to synthesize this stuff.
