NEED HELP GROWING CORALINE ALGAE!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Coraline is was very slow in my tank - the 1st 4 months was like just little dots and brown diatoms grew like crazy - now however the coraline is growin' like a bat outta hell and the diatoms are dwindling. Perhaps it's because of the upgrade in salt from the cheapist instant ocean I could find to Red Sea's SPS/LPS salt raising alk, mag,+ calcium, perhaps it's the overall maturity of the tank, perhaps it's the daily different foods used for the reef - ie - reef snow (bacerioplankton), zoo+phytoplanktons, oyster eggs,+ blackpowder, perhaps it's the carbon dosing, perhaps it's the DIY R/O treating of the w/c and top off water - however I'm more inclinded to think it's a combination of ALL of the above.

Agreed...attention to all the little details and stability will go a long ways in SW and reef aquaria.

How do you like the black powder? Used any other dry reef foods?

Blackpowder is more or less powderized vegitation matter w/ vitamins - 1st ingredient Kelp. I know Marc Wiess has a reputation across the web as a snake oil dealer however I've seen 1st hand the georgaians and cucumber luvin' it. I also use weiss's reef bugs - substrate bacterioplankton eggs that hatch and have scrubbed the sub all but clean of diatoms as well as feed both corals and fish. Definately NO replacement for zoo and phyto just a supplimental variety.

No just wondering on your review of that coral food.

I have reef frenzy...probably going to mix in some black powder as well the next time I make a batch of reef food.

I will have to try the reef bugs.
