Need help setting up a FOWLR

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i got it recommended to me from a guy that owns a fish store. they use it in all their display tanks. it basically looks like the stuff you buy from the store. you can get it in all different sizes, from sand to larger gravel. you may want to look into it. chicken grit is probably not common in your area like it is in mine. lots of farm land and such around

anyways, heres an update. my lfs convinced me that a 20 gallon tank underneath my main tank for a sump would be too small. i ended up getting a new 50 gallon tank for a sump. am i crazy? haha. didnt plan on this at all!

got my tank drilled with a 1.5" bulkhead today. started painting the back 2 sides of the tank, with latex based paint. doesnt seem to work the greatest? should i be using oil based? seems like im going to have to do about 10 coats before its covered.

lol you could have stuck with the 20 but hey that just means your filtration will be that much better. Its monsterfishkeepers and thats what we do!

Looking good, and 1 coat of paint will actually work, but it doesn't start looking clean till after a few. You can have some spots just make sure no light is behind the tank.

Seems like everything is moving right a long

yeah, my buddy there just really recommended me going bigger. He said it will be worth it in the long run. this hobby always brings my bank account new suprises!i guess ill have to just keep putting coats on and see how it goes.

I have a 55 under my 360 :D

But i also have a huge wet/dry compartment, size of some isn't very important. Effectiveness can go a long ways, but its always great to have more water volume. Just some don't have the pocket for it all ;)

I didn't read the entire thread but keep this in mind; the sump essentially increases your water volume so bigger is always better.

From the looks of the pics I think you are off to a nice start.

I'm new to MFK but been in the loop for awhile...
I remember having a tank drilled while it was full.
I thought twice, but with sufficient thickness glass (at least 3/8 - something like a 10 gal is like 50/50 she'll crack) if you lower the water level below the hole and have a powerhead irrigating the bit/hole, it works! Not that I would ever recommend it.
Takes a coat or two just to have something for the paint to stick to. Also, use a foam cheapo brush. A brush with bristles will take forever and not go on evenly.
The (relatively) big sump is a major +! Less likelihood you will have any sway in water parameters and you will invariably start collecting random equipment you'll want to play with.

Also, with regard to R/O water and the INTENT of your system.
You are wise to go FOWLR to start.
This is basically the easiest marine system to maintain.
In choosing hearty species that are of comparable size and demeanor, you will have a low maintainance, low cost system system.
Puffers and hearty species of fish can thrive in less-than-ideal water quality.
Don't sweat the RODI yet IMO. Spend the money on some carbon and mesh bag / salt for water changes.

Wait on any coral/ invert/

I need to knock out a couple more posts and then I can dig into the site!
I've been silently lurking in the backgrond for like 2 years now! Maybe I'll contribute something already!
I have 1800 gallons of saltwater in my basement consisting of (2) 550 acrylics (sharks) a 300 Rubbermaid (lagoon style LPS and softies) and a 400 round tub sump.
