NEED HELP! Stringray won't eat pellets

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd have to disagree on this, of you have an established filtration then you can do with once a week.

It says in your sig that you have ray fever but you cannot afford one...

how about you own one for a while before you start telling other people how to care for one....

and yes..20% a day rather the 20% a week...or 50% twice a week.

Forgot to change that, i actually have a pair in my care. What I meant on my post was that its possible for a weekly water change rather than daily if you have an established filtration.

cant argue much on the points made.. short answer is it takes time and patience to convert rays and other fish from a live diet to a pellet diet.. im still not 100% behind pelleted diets, any more then i am processed foods for my family. digging up worms very soon wont be an option once winter hits... and being stubborn enough to let an animal die then admit you cant properly house it and find it a new home, disgusts me. Yes MFK is here to help, your fish. Not you. not many people here are going to help you justify intentional negelect/ abuse of your fish. Read the stickies, alot of info that WORKS. you also never mentioned what species you keep or what size it is. im assumeing its a young ray and likely a motoro, or maybe a retic. young fish should never be starved imo ever, anymore then anyother young animal.

and i agree 20% once a week is insufficent in most cases. depends heavily on water volume and bio-load of system. But few people understock their tanks.

you are 100% correct in that...it is possible, but..why would you..?

would "you" rather breath fresh clean air...or air that has been filtered over and over again?
now thats just my personal opinion.

Now, whats a fact...is that stingrays are a fragile creature that can and will react badly or die over the simplest of things...
so give them the best in what they need most...clean water.

You'll benefit more to do 80-90% once a week than 20% a day IMO, larger volume being displaced at the same time. That discuss dude should know that if you really keep discuss LOL

If they don't eat pellets, then so be it...feed them shrimp, fish, worms and etc. Variety is what they need to get the most out of beneficial minerals and vitamins. Pellets give you that, if not, start feeding all kinds of food to make it up.

Rays are the easiest fish to keep LOL, a bunch of ppl here makes it difficult on their own LOL

I do keep them, used to breed them but just kept my remaining stock in a comm with the ray.

I think that a varied diet is the best you can do. I heard people freeze a variety of sea food for stock upto a month.

Have to agree with you there, rays are easier to keep than lets say discus or dats.

About your point on fresh air lets just go midway here. If you have the luxury and the time to do a daily water change then thats all well and good. But for us who can't, we rely on beefing up our filters to keep our water clean as well as the weekly water change. Been doing it for 10 years and it hasn't failed me yet.

I gotta agree that rays are pretty easy to keep compared to other fish, but so many people don't even do the slightest bit of research before buying them.

Be careful keeping those discus with your smaller rays. I've heard that they tend to peck at the rays' eyes. Also, once your rays get bigger your expensive discus might end up a nice snack!

As for beefing up your filtration... that all well and good, but nitrites aren't removed that way. Unless you have live plants or another type of filtration you're only removing them via water changes.

Been keeping them together for about a year now and no aggression at all.

I have a mechanical and 2 biological chambers in my sump. And it goes hand in hand with regular water change

Go look at all the other forums and compare the "HELP ME" threads to the ones in the stingray forum...
