Hey everyone! hows it going?
I have a 55 gallon fresh water setup. I want to convert it to a saltwater setup. i need help on doing this. All the stuff i need and etc.

So far i have a Biowheel filter, power head and a heater.

how do i change it to salt water?

im new at this too but from what ive been reading from other threads...you need the sea salt...a hydrometer to check the salinity level...possibly reef sand, uhmm maybe a protein skimmer and probably another or better filtration than a hob ( hang on back ) filters...

wow its 12:40 am and i just did a full clean up of my 55 gal. In the next week or 2 i am going to be getting rid of everything.

Get yourself a basic hydrometer. It'll help you read your salinity. Personally, I'd start out by buying some live sand, salt and uncured live rock. You'll get uncured rock for a much cheaper price than cured rock, and watching it cure is a big part of the fun, in my opinion. Since there's nothing alive in the tank right now you could possibly even cure the rock in the tank itself. What I did with my 1st (and so far only) SW tank was ask my LFS what level they kept their salinity at and tried my best to match it so that anything I bought from them would have an easier time adapting to my tank. It worked out pretty well.

I would get the tank cleaned out of freshwater inhabitants and then get it filled with RO water. RO because its better for saltwater. dump in salt and let it mix with the powerheads and get it up to the proper level. Leave a few inches from the top so you can add the sand after a little while. Dont use the filter until you have the sand and rock in the tank because the water line will be low, after adding sand and rock raise the water line however much you need to and let the filter do its job. run it with just floss for a few days. you can add carbon if you would like but not needed at this stage. after the tank clears up for a week or two and all the levels are good, temp, salinity, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, etc, then add a small clean up crew. these guys will kick off the tank and get some bacteria buildup going. very important. after this get a stocking list put together and let us know what your plans are so we can help you with that as well if you need it. use the same thread so we can go from start to finish.

dang sweet ang ive been wanting to set one up also that just mad it sound pretty easy... thanx

This what i am going to do since money isnt a problem. I am going to clean out my whole tank. get about 4 big bags of live sand, 50lbs of live rock, and 50 gals of Nutri- SeaWater. the total would be aroud $600 or less. Then just wait and see what happens.
