Need help with 55gal to change into saltwater

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The number one protein skimmer is a Turboflotor1000. It is designed to be placed in a sump. Are you going to have fish only,or corals polyps, etc. You have to decide what type of setup you want. Use live sand not crushed coral. Get the live sand. You need it to be at least 2to3 inches deep. Mix the saltwater in a Brute garbage can on wheels. Then add mixed saltwater to tank. Turn on filters, heaters, etc and m ake sure everything is working properly. You could either do a fishless cycle, or use a couple of spotted groupers to cycle the tank.

dang sweet ang ive been wanting to set one up also that just mad it sound pretty easy... thanx

It is pretty easy but you should consider all the small things as well. Corals or not for example, with corals the cost and consideration of detail comes into play more then it normally would. I would recommend for anybody who is new to the hobby, to pick up a book and start reading the basic how to area. Figure these out and you wont have much problem down the road. If you don't do research and add whatever whenever then you risk running into a huge problem. Read other peoples threads about setting up SW tanks and see what is all recommended and then ask questions when you come across a specific one.

I cleaned out my tank and got it empty and washed it. i added water leaving some space on the top. about 3 inches left. added salt and turned the power head on.

salt water gets expensive real fast... so i hoe you have a budget... if not stick with fresh water for a while and get experience.... lights alone could run you 500+ for that tank, add a RO/DI...like another 300... on top of that a skimmer and better filtration... a good power head or a wave maker.... its pricey... and especially cause a 55 is kinda small for a salty tank... it might not be worth it
