Need help with 55gal to change into saltwater

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thats going to present a problem. Tap water has so much material in it that is just not good for keeping corals and inverts in a saltwater tank. Phsphate causes a ton of algae growth and you will for sure get bubble algae which is a huge pain, next to hair algae. Copper which will most likely kill any shrimp you plan on adding and most likely your coral as well. Silicates, which will also aid in the growth of algae, high Nitrate levels which will not help you because those have to be very low, at the most 10ppm and thats almost right out of the tap. i could keep going but i hope you get the point lol. Thats the reason for going with Reverse Osmosis water. You going to be spending a lot of money going through corals and inverts, so just invest in the RO unit right away.

buy an RO unit or get find a store that sells RO water. This is the best way to do it. IMO i would hold off on sand and rock until you get the RO water in there. You can do small changes at a time but as i said ealier, its imperative to use the RO water for the life or the coral.

like the natural sea mix?? if so then you can but 4 gallon in a 55 gallon is not going to help you. The water needs too be as pure as possible. For a Reef enviroment you need to have everything almost perfect lol. No flaws or anything. I would suggest getting a good starter reef book and reading the cover to cover. You can never take in to much info about saltwater and reefs.

thats going to be your best option. the RO unit will pay itself off down the road anyways. A piece of advice is to get one that can do at least 40 gallons a day. This way you can ensure that you will always have water. I like having at least the full volume of the tank, within reason of course in case you need to do a big water change to correct a mistake. Please the get the books and RO unit before you do anything further with the tank, this will give you the best direction to go down and make you experience a pleasant one lol.
