Need help with this...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had dosed with Seachem kanamycin last night. The directions says up to 3 doses (two days apart for each dose). Being this is essentially antibiotics, do I need to dose 2 and 3? It definitely looked a bit lethargic this morning, but coming around in the afternoon.

Unless this defeats the purpose, I'm leaning on laying off the meds and chill in the hospital for another week with soaked pellets. Then, "back on the streets".

Personally I would follow the directions on the label, or not dose at all.

What is "essentially antibiotics"?

If this product is an antibiotic, then doing what you suggest is, quite literally, the worst thing possible. That is exactly the sort of misuse which promotes the development of resistant strains of bacteria. A potential danger to your fish, you, me...

Irresponsible use of antibiotics is also what leads many countries to outlaw their sale without a prescription, in an effort to curtail this kind of behaviour.

It was an honest question above and was not my intent to put YOU in danger. I don't think I have that much power - relax man.

Interestly I was was watching some videos about what you speak of. What you say could have negative impact in the longer term, but I think there's other political influences besides some guy trying to cure his fish. However those educating didnt have the condescending tone as Im getting from you. Save it for someone else.

No intention to condescend, but also no intention to tell you what you want to hear if I don't believe it's correct. You got advice to use a medicine, then asked if you should follow the directions on dosage. What kind of question is that? You also now admit to being aware of the potential dangers...but since they don't match up with what you want to do, you discount that line of reasoning as "political".

No problem, I'll let you be, and "save it for someone else". This is the internet; you'll always find someone, somewhere, who will agree with whatever you decide to do.

I got advice for "one round of kanamycin". Does that mean one dose or all 3 doses? Tell me how I should have interpret that.

Do you know what Im going to do? It was a question based on "one round" .

No, it's ok to disagree I'm very comfortable with that. The irony here is that I don't. Yeah the internet, people can really come across high on themselves and I wonder if most people talk the way they do face to face.

Anyway, my fish doesnt look lethargic so I think the thing to do is follow the directions. Thanks again folks for getting to this point.

Working in healthcare I can safely say that you are most likely not going to create a MDRO with one round (1 dose) or 3 rounds of Kanamycin in an aquarium. I mean there is Zoonotic transmission of bacteria (klebsiella, strep, etc) from fish to human, but most fauna that are pathogenic to fish are not pathogenic to humans...besides some Mycobacterium (fish TB). Most of that can be mitigated simply by good hand hygiene (from zoonotic transmission)...anyways.

I think when the Abx was suggested much earlier in the thread...it was for prophylaxis (preventing infection). Your fish had a prolapse that could make it susceptible to a secondary infection. If your fish is still eating and not showing outward signs of illness anymore after the round that kno4te kno4te suggested, than just provide good water and husbandry at this point imho.

I think what was suggested above also has merit, because you should always complete a therapeutic regimen of abx if you are sick. Same goes for fish that have a bacterial infection...follow the directions and complete the regimen. If you have a cold or virus...do not take abxs...this is one of the biggest contributors to MDRO's...the overuse of abx.

Most importantly, I am glad the little guy/gal is doing better...
