Ok I'll try that but yah its gotta be black.

All the types I cited are blac or black base. There are gray and green obsidians but, they're usually more evpensive.

Check out cat's hair obsidian. It's pretty rare. It's solid black. But, as you move it around in the light, you can see waves of silver "cat hair" floating inside the stone. The silver can be as bright as christmas tinsel.

nice, thanks for the info.

whee I need big black rocks =) got enough gravel to last me awhile. its going in a sand tank!

Depends on what kind of black rock you need. I haven't seen black stones or spherical shape rock, however, I found nice black granite slates at some masonry/gardening yards or stores. I have one close to my home, and they have 1/8" river rocks for $15 for a 50lb bag.

I take it back, I have also seen black stones called river rocks, but they are smooth. Mostly used for masonry design.

I am unclear as to what you want.

Do you "A" want black gravel or do you "B" want rocks and if you want rocks how many and how big in inchs.

i guess the saying is true, once you go black you never go back. The most available source of black rocks is slate which is a dark gray to black rock but you can also use or onyx which is all black with white lateral lines or the last one is smokey quartz its almost like a brownish black. I'd go with onyx, becuase for some reason algae does not grow on it and that can be an advantage.
