i'm thinking of just putting the rbps in one of my 200gals and letting them grow out in there. but it's gonna be difficult to make sure they eat well if it's in such a big tank. i'll have about 20 all ranging at 2-3" each because i wanted to grow them out. or should i grow them out in a smaller sized tank?

I 100% agree with what joe was saying in his post.

The 20g per fish rule only applies for full grown fish 8+ inches.

Also when they are juvy there is a good chance of losing some along the way, its easier to thin out the shoal then decide later on that you want more and try finding some similar size to the ones you have.

I would start out with 3 dozen dime size ones. Vendors usually have discount if you buy them by the dozen. It won't take long before they hit 2 inches. And the small ones are a lot cheaper than buying them at 2 inches. They will grow like weeds. I would also put them in the 200g and watch them growout in that tank. With 3 dozen small rbs your tank won't look dull and you will definitely see movement and action in the tank especially during feedings.

start with 20 and keep a dozen of the best ones eventually.
a dozen is the max you can do in a 200 IMO.i have 13 adults in a 300 gal and its cramped for room

yeah i guess i can start with 20, grow them out then keep the best ones and trade the others for some other fish i might want for other tanks. sounds like a good idea.

if you start with enough, the 200 gallon would be just fine to start them in... pygos in groups usually have no problems finding food, even at that size. to make sure everyone is getting fed, just spread the food out across the tank.

That tank is way overstocked. He says it's 147 gallons with 35 pygos but his plan was to only keep 10-12.

omg did you see at the end how one pygo bit his hand hahaha :D then he sort of shook it off!!!!
