Tank size is too small for one anyways. Depending on your skill level a more "hard to keep" pair of shrimp might be cool. A smaller watchman goby and a shrimp combo would be neat also.

There are two ways to remove it. Either plants or WC in my mind. With a very lightly stocked tank (hermits) you might be able to just grow a macro in there...then again, the macro would probably out compete the hermits food source.
This is why an AC fuge mod would be a good choice on a tank like this, adding volume, filtration, nitrate removal, and potentially a food source for inhabitants.
If you cant afford salt for a 5.5g aquarium, you should probably not have it. Thats just me being honest. Salt costs about $0.27 a gallon...
