Neon Tetra breeding log...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am setting up another 10 gallon tank to grow plants like java moss and anacharis. I thought I would be able to use a co2 yeast bottle and a diffuser but I either clogged the diffuser or it takes alot of pressure to get bubbles. My yeast bottle is a cheap 1 gallon water bottle and it will leak co2 before getting enough pressure to use the diffuser. so...

I have a small pump set at the lowest setting it can be at and still pull in the bubbles as they are made. The result is *alot* of micro bubbles and not much water flow. It takes the pump several seconds to chop up each bubble it sucks in.

I have left the pair of neons in the container for another day to see if they spawn tomorrow. The plants are for the neons just in case plastic doesn't work well.

Neons are susposeto spawn in the mornings and they do... The first day they were in the tub they didn't spawn. The second day I added some medium sized magnas to the water and the next morning I noticed they were swimming as a pair and the female had "picked a favorite spot" next to the plastic plant. I saw them spawning a couple hours after I turned on the lights so I left them in there most of the day. Took them out and shined a light into the bowl from the side and saw these eggs.

Anyone know if acrylic sinks in freshwater?

Around 50 but I didn't try to get an exact count. I hope the translucent white eggs are fertilized as there are also some mostly transparent eggs. In preparation I have started a rotifer culture and if what I have read about rotifers is true I should have a well populated culture ready for the neons in 3-4 days. I am using rotifers instead of infusoria on this spawn to see how well it works as a first food.

IMO yeast bottles need to be started with luke warm water. First day I was lucky if there was a bubble every minute or 2, Second day I had the same problem so I added a heating pad set on high under the bottle. This morning there were alot of bubbles being produced so I turned off the heat to see if the reaction persists. I'm guessing it slows down but not to the point where I am only getting a bubble every minute or 2 like before.

So of the 50 eggs how many do you think will survive to be sold? If this works for you I might look into doing something similar to this.

I dont know for sure what I will do, this is just a pilot project really... alot of work for only 50 neons => I'll count the survivors after a month.

correction: alot of waiting... LOL

This spawn failed all the eggs have disintegrated without any fry. I have to be more careful with how I am selecting the neons... I used the male neon twice in 2 days and apparently none of the eggs were fertilized.

Also I was shining an LED flashlight into the container that may have contributed to the zero hatch of this spawn.
