Go for 4 or 5 Bichirs. My wife thought my old ornate bichir was the uglyest thing ever. But after she fed him some worms. It became her pet. She calls him her little puppy. Something to do with its fins and face. If you breed them. I'll be your first buyer for the fry. Good luck with the plumbing. Wish I could help. But I'm learning all I can about sumps also.

I Have a 4 inch bichir, does well above 7 ph and moves plenty, just needs bloodworms and shrimp pellets and no caves, just small hiding spotsl. He's slowly growing in my 15 gallon getting ready for the other tank
 
I would do the 10 gallon sump and stick an empor 400 on the back for more filtration or get a 15-20 gallon sump...
