New 180G Arow Tank-Need advice please!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Most Rays will also out grow a 180g, and you need to measure it. If it's only 18" deep it's either a REALLY tall 180g or a 125g. Either way that limits you a lot more, depth is way more important than height.

Post the measurements and we'll tell you what exactly it is.

The fish's length should never exceed the aquariums depth, or even be more than 75% of the depth in my opinion. So if it is indeed an 18" deep tank then your Aro will last about 8 months in there before it is to large. They will easily grow 1" per month so the fish would be very cramped at that point if it did start at 10".

He already stated it was 7' long and with the link provided it looks to be about 24" tall. I will agree with ya on the fish's length at least equalling the tanks depth though. A black aro is more flexable and you could house upto a 22" black aro in that 18" tank.

I will post the actual dimensions around 4. I am buting it from a guy who has 4 tanks and breeds rays. He also had an arow in that tank. Obviously this doesn't mean he is an expert, but he seemed to be well informed and passionate. I may be off on my numbers. But yes, it is a 180G tank.

Basically I am OK getting this tank started so long as do not have to upgrade for at least 12 months.

As stated, we'll get the actual hard numbers soon BUT

If I get a 10" Arow, how long until he outgrows that Tank? Let's assume he is a fast grower like his old man:-)

If the tank is 24" deep then you'd have a year in my opinion, if 18" deep then 8 months like I said in my previous post.

Also this is considering the fish starts at 10" and is able to grow like normal because it is fed well and healthy and isn't stressed. You'll also need to keep the water change schedule on time and keep the parameters in check. This will also help make sure the fish is happy and healthy and able to grow.

I would say figure for 1" a month growth from the black aro. Starting with a 10" I would say you'll be OK for about a year

Took a look at your tanks- very nice! Looks like you have/had two arows in a 180G tank. They got along? How big were/are they in the 180G. Do you think getting 2 10" or 2 5" arows would be OK?

Unanswered questions:
1. How many Arows can/should I raise in this tank (keeping in mind in 1 year we can jump to something over 300G)
2. My preference is : 1-Stingray 2-Fire Eel 3- King Tiger Pleco. Since they are all bottom guys I am assuming all three would NOT work. Advice? Can I have Rays and the Fire Eel?
3. How many Green Terrors and @ what size?
4. (optional, but desireable): Either Dog Characins or Gars (how many/what size)
5. Albino Oscar or Parrot Cichlid? One or more. Again, what size?

Obviously I need to make sure the little guys are all closer in size than not to prevent a free sushi buffet....

Your advice has been awesome. Thanks & keep it comin!

Thanks, yes I have two 25" plus silvers in the 180g. They'll be moving to a 350g as soon as I can get setup. Two aros is hit and miss, took three different trys(5 aros total) to get a pair that would not fight. Key to doing this is having a way to seperate the fish(multiple large tanks)

Many members here have had sucsess with raising a group of 5 or 6 aros together, the tank you are getting would only be good for this for maybe 6 months.

2. My preference is : 1-Stingray 2-Fire Eel 3- King Tiger Pleco. Since they are all bottom guys I am assuming all three would NOT work. Advice? Can I have Rays and the Fire Eel?

I would think fire eels would be fine, but I am not qualified to give advise on rays

With mixing cichlids and aros; you need to keep small aros by themselves upto 6 or 7". Then add cichlids at 1/2 the aros length. Hard to say how many cause you have no set stock. I do not know how well rays and cichlids mix.

IMO you should just get the aro(s) assuming this is your primary fish you want and wait on other tankmates. You've come up with multiple stocking suggestion, there are lots of species you have yet to discover, all species need to be researched individually.

Just out of curiousity, how long have you been keeping fish? Do you have any current tanks?
