New 3500 gallon tank- trying to decide what fish...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Now the pics of the pump room- I need ideas on filtration, as it looks like this is a pool filter I am going to need more bio filtration that this. I also want a UV filter.

Pump and filter:

Closeup of the 1HP electric pump:

Pump and filter plumbing:

Pressure guage on filter:

Filter media (the old one):

MONSTER heater:

Heater control:

Temp guage on heater intake, there is a second one (not pictured) on heater output pipe.

Closup of the filter label- not really able to read it in pic, sorry.

Pipes for intake and overflow- overflow is on right and goes right into drain, on left is pump intake and has valve to go to pump or drain

Pipes for filter output- red hose is drain for drip tray, goes into drain. Pipe on left is the unused pipe pictured below. Pipe on right goes into current filter output.

Unused pipe - looks to be old intake for pump (pump and filter replaced in '02)

I would recommend a sand filter used specifically for ponds. They are low maintenance and just require regular back flushing. It will give the pond the bacteriological and mechanical filtration it needs. You're UV idea is a good one and would cut down or eliminate any floating algae problems if used along with a good filter (sand) and proper stocking levels and water quality. Hair algae and other types of algae might be a problem though with all of the light that is present. Make sure your tap water does not have any nitrates or phosphates in it from the start as these feed algae and will cause it to thrive. If the water is OK I would also recommend weekly water changes of at least 25%. Arowanas will not work in a pond such as this as they spook easily and really like to jump. Dried up Arowanas are no fun!

A 2 foot deep pond seems a bit shallow for a fish that gets 6 feet long...

yeah aros and p. bass would prob jump out....I like the african
rift lake idea! you could put hundreds of different color fish in there

That is a cool idea but really expensive. some albino (and red) oscars would be cool along with other S. American big fish and cats?
The albino oscars would really stand out in this tank. The aros would be really cool but afraid of them jumping out and getting stuck in the gardens (about a 12" drop from the top of the water in some places).
