89 degrees with no heater? That is really high....at what temp do you keep your room temperature? Even in summer when my house temperature creeps into the 80's, my tank temp is usually several degrees cooler.

If you house temp is at 75 degrees, that would mean your pumps are heating up the water 14 degrees. That's high even for a submersible pump, much less an external inline. Addiontionally, you have 450 gallons of water plus what's in the sump. That's a huge volume.

89 degrees should feel very warm if you stick your hand in the tank. If you have been keeping aquariums for a while, 89 degrees should be shockingly warm to the touch. Can you test the temp with another thermometer to ensure that your controller isn't giving a false reading?

I don't see what's the big deal. In the summer my tank water is 95 degrees. The fish are fine cuz I have a lot of aeration. Have you try testing the water with another therometer? It's possible those control unit might be faulty.

Hi all, just put in a digital thermometer from Big Als...started out at 77 and not steading at 90 vs. the 89 on my Ranco! I usually don't worry about the temp in any of my tanks and they usually range around 78-80 anyways...but my 150gal is also in the high 80s hrm....everythings fine though...I originally filled the tank with 75 tap water...keeping in mind that my tank is also 1" thick acrylic.....so that might also keep the heat in more then normal...I'm not going to turn on any lights on for the next few days to see if the temp comes down. I have my actinic blue light on as well...I have the blue light on for an hour twice a day on a timer....will see if that will change the temp...Room temp is currently 72 degrees.

Any thoughts.

Well tanks been cycling for just over a week with the new bioballs and 2 out of 3 trays from my old Eheim Pro 3 so the BB should have a good start.

My Electrician just installed 2 20amp circuits inside my cabinet so when i plug in my heater and uv and turn on the lights it won't trip my breakers.

So here's another potential issue....since I plugged in my ranco controller yesterday (without the heaters), it was giving me a reading of 89degrees....that's high consider there's no heater in there. I suspect my 2 Reeflow Snapper 18 pumps are heating the water as they past...at this point I'm not sure if a chiller is needed? It's going to remain a bare bottom tank and tenants are my 7 Rays and a Red Arrowana....

What do you guys think?
What's the size of return hose? I hope you didn't use so small hose that it constraints the flow, and your pumps. You need to check if there's anything obstruct the return flow, before your pumps get burnt out.

There are two 1" return hoses per pump. NO constraints that I can see. The return flow seems fine. This is a complete marine 6 setup from tenecor.

This is weird. Need to figure it out before fis goes in.

Ok I think I've figured out where the heat is coming from. The cabinet is fully enclosed all four sides with vent slots in the back. I left the doors open last night and temp dropped by 3 degrees. I'm pretty sure that's the source. Now I have to figure out how yo cool the inside of the cabinet. I won't be able yo move or get behind the tank since it's push up against a wall ( not light either :-)

Might look at potentially putting a fan inside to at least circulate the air.

monster tank and some niiice filtration
great setup
